Chaika #07 — “The Episode We Really Didn’t Want To Do”

And it shows.
Impressions:
I got the distinct feeling that nobody wanted to do this episode/quasi-arc, but word came down from the producers on high and so everyone went into it with a groan and just got through it as quickly as possible instead of sticking to the 2 episodes per arc formula they’ve been using. For one thing, outside of the obligatory 30 second fight scene (which was admittedly better than usual), the art and animation was rather… squeamy. The whole dream fog bit also seemed like it’d be a ripe field for comic relief or… well… anything, but the only even vague overture they made towards that was her running off thanks to the gift of a severed arm, just like how Harvest Moon works, and that was it. Time to move on to exposition about the crazy guy ranting.
I… guess good on them for at least minimizing the damage at least? Outside of the (once again!) pointless antagonists pissing around about looking for them and wondering about the motivations, it did cover ground, but nothing had any substance to it. They spent more time lecturing about the severed limb guardian du jour than he did existing in the show. It just all had the foul stench of compromise hanging over it.
And how’d they get their tank back anyway?
Next Episode:
No seriously. How’d they get their tank back?

I want more Red Chaika. Can’t the next 5 episodes be beach/hot spring episodes about her?
