“That’s a lot cheaper to animate.”

Impressions:

Remember way way back when there was the original Black Rock Shooter and I said it’d be an interesting experiment to just cut out everything that wasn’t the metaworld? I’m starting to feel pretty much the same way toward this show only with the peanut gallery. The most egregious of which was an exchange that basically went. “What’s she doing? It looks like she’s just standing still!” “I’m glad you asked. Allow me to explain.” And then nearly a goddamned minute and a half of exposition. This is not how you direct an action scene. It’s… well… It’s basically your standard lazy Jump adaptation of one. And then they scream/grunted at each other for another minute or two, including further explanation from the gallery. Any goodwill it might have earned from putting some effort into the choreography at the start was quickly squandered away, and even then, all the cuts to the peanut gallery to ooh, ahh, and comment on it made sure it wasn’t much to begin with.

The second half was even worse. It’s bad enough that they had a ‘humbling’ episode with this guy that had no effect whatsoever on Ryuko, but now he’s just jobbing for the new antagonist (group). Fantastic use of him all around, guys. And no, I don’t really care that she claims to be the murderer either. After listening to her drone on and on and/or other people explain how super special great awesome she was for pretty much ten straight minutes, the reveal of something the show really has only barely given a damn about thus far does not rock my world.
