Tokyo Ravens #05 — Kick Demon – The Final Kickening

November 5th, 2013

Maybe we could pull it back a little, eh?

Impressions:

This was a weird 180 in a lot of ways from last week and just furthers my belief that the last two episodes here really should have been just one. Everybody was suddenly everybody’s friends, the background characters were getting in on things, and the monster of the week wasn’t even CGI, thus answering the question of "Why are the monsters CGI here?" Captain Kicky there was not what I would call a particularly enthralling fight. I think most of the budget went to trying to make Captain Crazy look as weird as possible. Whatever tone they were going for with him, they didn’t hit it. Like Ver with Symphogear, it just looks completely silly. And yet there was also a stirring speech about friendship and believing in something or other, meant to rouse the hearts to overcome this dastardly villain… who is clutching himself and drooling. Perhaps some xanax would have sufficed.

I’m less than enthralled with the whole forgotten childhood friend I’ve been in love with forever and ever and ever angle (with an extra forgotten childhood friend on the side, no less!), even if it is starting to strain the "Natsume pretending to be a guy" thing past boringly painful and straight into Mr. Magoo territory. If you’re going to have a terrible idea, you might as well make it as goddamned terrible as possible after all. I guess this means the gang’s together then and they can go off solving mysteries or saving the environment or or turning off the gas leaks so they all stop being flushed or whatever the hell they’re supposed to be doing.

  • Novelism says:

The Harutora+LoliFox VS Kyouko+GCSoldiers fight may be a good candidate for the Shortest Fight Ever in an anime.
Pity for those who were anticipating that fight.

Up till now, I’m fine with most of the changes operated by the studio, but while the source is far from perfect, this all could have felt less rushed/made more sense if they didn’t cut some of those parts when Harutora and Natsume quarrel (for instance, when he asked her to make him her shikigami, she wasn’t really fine with it at first).

    Kick Demons 2: Kick Harder

  • The Phantom says:

At least it tries, this, machine doll and strike the blood are the only thing worthwhile airing right now after Stratos trainwrecked.

  • FlameStrike says:

I like this series, but even I have to admit the pacing was rather bad haha. I seriously face palmed when the gang was just sitting and talking for like 5 minutes while that weird corrosive smoke abducted Natsume.
