Kill la Kill #02 — Trying To Make Tennis Exciting
October 10th, 2013
Slayers couldn’t manage it either.
Outbreak Company’s second episode failed to keep my interest for five minutes, so I flipped forward to see him pussy out of yelling at the bratty princess for wanting to beat the maid because different cultures to swelling violins showing the tragedy of the objectified fanservice joke character or something and decided that was about enough of that. Also, I need to go out and do Aroduc stuff for a while (root for nuts and berries, bury carcasses, etc). I’ll get to the last episode of that home show after I get back.
Impressions:
Well, that answers the question of how they’re going to stretch things out. Making her run away because her power level is only enough for one fight! And arbitrary mini games! Because nothing improves hot blooded and stylistic action like adding rules and removing the one exciting part of tennis, thirty year olds throwing temper tantrums. Not to mention make it more obvious how utterly arbitrary things are. I get that it’s not meant to be taken 100% seriously, but there’s also no tension when the ‘fight’ is entirely predicated on the bad guy saying "Nuh uh. You lose at tennis." If you want to be badass then we need to not be using a tennis rulebook as the impetus for conflict. Go all out, or don’t try. It sort of got there eventually, but that was after they played regular tennis… with a faster ball and odd looking rackets!
Otherwise, pretty much the same as last week’s episode. Lots of style, little substance. I’m not sure what’s really to say about it honestly. Remark on the awful out-of-place "maybe she’s about to be raped" joke? They need to pick whether they want to run with the comedy side or the badass side though. The ‘comical’ beatings of the sub-girl that they turn around and try to use the exact same attacks to get the excitement up don’t work. Any attempts to build up a fight are undercut by having the invulnerable gag character shrugging off ten times worse than what the heroine is taking.

Yeah it does seem to have a bit of an identity crisis. I prefer the energy of the comedy over the action cause it seems better done. When it gets to the action parts its largely just a lot of posture and overall looks hampered by its apparently thin budget.
