Maken-ki 2 #00 — Now With Fewer Penises

September 28th, 2013

Not no penises. Just fewer.

Non-Impressions:

No thanks to someone reminding me of its existence, I went ahead and grabbed it, tossed it in the ol’ screencapulator, and then played Civ 4 for about three hours, occasionally stopping to mark out a few more caps. I did this under the assumption that I had covered the first OVA of it back in March of 2012 and would end up watching the first episode of the next season of it (winter) anyway. It could also be a nice standards lowering aperitif before the next season kicks off… as if Gaist Crusher doesn’t already have that well in line. Hell if I can remember though. I barely remember things I translated last month. The only thing I recall from the first season is that it aired alongside literally nothing else and the main character’s one attack on the entire show was to destroy a guy’s pants. Not even a female’s.

But here we are now. I didn’t watch the first OVA, or if I did, I never posted about it and have no memory of it. The Incan hordes have pacified their Native American/Holy Roman/Portuguese foes and entered into an uneasy alliance with the Jewish Sino/Ottoman alliance that will be concluded on another day and I still have no will to watch this, even after stuffing myself silly on a creamy white wine parmesan cajun chicken pasta. I think I got the whole gender bending experience just fine anyway.

Your move, internet.

Maybe I’ll cover the Kenichi OVA(s) that I missed a little later once I’m feeling less stuffed and ornery.

Gotta hand it to Takeru, at least he’s an assertive MC. It made the OVA a lot more entertaining to watch.

  • jingoi says:

at least there wasn’t a ton of horrible female on male abuse
why only show 5 girls nude
    maken ki is still terrible

  • kenuran says:

    You’re welcome

  • The Phantom says:

YOU SHOULD retake Attack on Titan, not only is the best action show airing right now (WOW EPISODE 25 KICK ASS) but is the best action show that has aired in YEARS.

    • Longhaul says:

fanboyism rears its ugly head again

      • algorithm says:

I honestly wished Aroduc would cover that one, it was so damn terrible on so many levels. Imagine him during the “pick the boulder” arc or the “running through the forest” arc.

    • Israfel says:

Not fanboyism, just somebody who doesn’t understand how Aroduc selects anime. He never blogs the most popular or “consensus best” anime of any given season, and he really seems to prefer blogging/watching anime that presents as comedy – or at least dra-medy (mostly because anime typically handles drama even more poorly than it usually handles comedy). Attack on Titan is not the kind of show that gets coverage here, regardless of its merits.

      • Aroduc says:

It’s almost like the “what’s popular” crowd and I have consistently different opinions on what a good show is.

Except that unlike anime, I can’t remember the last time anybody got upset at me for not liking American Idol or Two and a Half Men just because they’re extra super popular.

        • Israfel says:

Fair point, although I think the vast majority of people who watch Two and a Half Men or Idol would never claim that those are currently the best (non-anime) shows on television (or even particularly good ones).

That said, I love it that you don’t give shows a pass when they have glacial pacing. You hold anime to a much higher critical standard than most, which is why I like this site so much.

P.S. Your game localization work is outstanding.

You need a lot of coffee to watch the whole thing. Poor taste is also recommanded to stand those godawful dialogues and stupid characters.

  • Longhaul says:

“I didn’t watch the first OVA”
The montage in the beginning is the gist of what happened. This had significantly better animation.
