Nerd Trek: TNG #01 — Cavalcade of Crossdressing

July 6th, 2013

I think the entire club wears women’s underwear.

Impressions:

Beginning with almost a minute straight of just walking along CG paths and hallways… Not a great sign for production. I guess probably nobody expected this to be a visual tour de force anyway though, but that was certainly not how to make a good first impression. Although it is a little strange since they apparently had the budget to animate Mr. Milquetoast getting thrown by the crossdresser. Otherwise, it’s about as cheap as I remember the first two seasons being, which is to say quite.

I’ve never been a particular fan of meta humor, but a lot of this does strike me as overly gimmicky and a kind of soulless attempt to simply identify and rebrand for more recent otaku fads, like adding a crossdresser and a super wacky girl (who was technically in the first series, but not a main character). A process sort of like how making Looney Tunes characters wear baggy pants and rap totally makes them modern and hip. Maybe I’m just old and bitter. Well, I am, but I don’t think that accounts for all of it. I was also annoyed that they were watching Bakemonogatari instead of one of their weird made-up shows too, so never let it be said I don’t carry a grudge too.

Next Episode:

Rocks fall, everybody dies.

Bakemonogatari has one pecker, many girls. hail to the MC self insertion, baby!

The only two characters I cared for in this series was Madarame as he wanted to drill Saki and made an effort to change to do failing and Kousaka cos he was drilling Saki, made little effort to do so and milking fighting games for what its worth at the same time. J-league gets an honourable mention.
