Love Lab #01 — Toast Practice

July 4th, 2013

I’m shocked that this show has males.

Impressions:

My first thought was "Christ, this show is pink." That soon gave way to the question of "How the hell are they deciding what to spend the budget on?" While the art’s nothing special, the animation’s surprisingly good. It’s also surprisingly inanely used. They overanimate the most utterly random of things with little purpose. It’s almost like they just threw darts at the storyboards to decide where the budget should go. Not always though, but even at its worst moments, it’s still energetic and expressive, actually matching up with the characters… well, character, herself. It was also nice to not be deafened by the background music (MBS broadcast bleeps jolting me out of my comfortable haze aside), but you can probably chalk that one up to the priming effect of the other shows I’ve watched so far today.

On the writing side of things, they do cruise straight through the introductory blurb premise and to the comedy, focusing exclusively on just two characters, keeping things well focused and on target without even having anybody narrate their own life story in an inner monologue. I think my standards are slipping. It did make me chuckle a few times, but I’m not sold on it. It was trying. It’s just that most of the jokes weren’t very good and it was basically the same Japanese "Silly character says or does something slightly strange, straight man hits them or waves their hand dismissively," comedy that is clearly a cultural taste which I lack. It did work decently enough when it was going all out and actually overexaggerating things, such as the full speed toast-run tackle, but those were the exceptions rather than the rule.

I guess I’ll give it another week or two to figure things out. It had a much better idea what it wanted to do and indeed was doing than Stella C3, but the humor wasn’t clicking for me more often than not and it’s hard to get very enthusiastic about a comedy that doesn’t make you laugh.
