Chronicles of the Going Home Club #02 — Power Overwhelming

July 11th, 2013

That’s some nappy looking bath water.

Impressions:

A lot less shouty than last week, which did help, but I’m not sure that I’m steeped in enough Japan for this episode. And it was still fairly shouty regardless without the visuals matching the same energy unless you count those obnoxious splash screen explosions as energy. If they abused them any harder, I’ll have to make another post like that Minami-ke one, comprised of nothing but those ugly-ass things. The show’s at its best and funniest when it actually uses its visuals for things other than PUNCHLINE HERE PLEASE LAUGH and clearly has no issue with being over the top, yet refuses to do it more than three or four times an episode instead of going all out with it.

Anyway, between the historical warlords and the Dragonball satire of the first half, and me not being a harp seal that claps excitedly when I recognize a reference to something, I felt a little disconnected. Probably because I was not born steeped in such or maybe it’s because my knowledge of Japan’s sengoku era comes primarily from Koei which parodies it better than anything else to begin with. The Dragonball bit wasn’t done too badly and was sufficiently over the top to be worth a few chuckles, which is more than I can say for the other comedies I’ve watched today, but that’s such trodden ground and they should have taken it a lot further than they did. Same with pretty much the entirety of the gender stuff in the second half.

I guess it’s the comedy I enjoyed most for the day, but with a bunch of abysmal second episodes from the others, I’m not feeling like it gets a gold star for that. I’ll figure out Thursdays eventually.

Next Episode:

Dinosaurs and sickness.

Red bath water means some hankypanky was going on in the tub.
