Gargantia #12 — Gasp! Twist Ending!
June 23rd, 2013
I wish.
Impressions:
Yawn. Red fights the space collectivists for team "yay fun!", squid remain utterly forgotten. Why the hell did they exist in the first place? Or have all this pissing about over them for the episodes leading up to it just to drop it for "cults are bad!"? And just in case you hadn’t yet figured out that the No-Fun-Allowed club was supposed to be the bad guys while the oblivious carefree zany teens of Gargantia are the good guys, the cult also ritualistically throws all of its old and infirm members into the sea to die. The only way they could have made things more black and white is to have the robot eat someone. Or maybe rape someone, although since Team Zany BBQ Sauce sexually molested their extraterrestrial, maybe that means rape would be too positive.
But of course, that doesn’t stop Red from having flashbacks about all he’s ‘learned,’ or whatever you want to call his seasponge-like personality. Or going into shocked horror when opening the cockpit and discovering that whose-his-face has been dead all this time. And yes, that was the shocking ‘twist’ at the end of the episode. Gasp! The fight wasn’t even particularly well animated. If you’re going to abuse CG, at least be ambitious with it. The non-CG during it also tended to get a bit… janky. Can it just be over already?
At the risk of going out on a limb, I’m going to assume that Red’ll now start losing the fight, but luckily, Gargantia will come sailing up to save his bacon for the power of friendship. And then they’ll roast a celebratory squid fetus.
