Little Busters! #02 — Social Retardation
October 13th, 2012
Ugh.
Young Justice (and all of CN’s DC Nation block) is off today for last minute issues… and apparently for a while? I don’t even know what CN’s doing. Apparently nobody does as the producer of GL:TAS was freaking out on Twitter over it earlier. I also have no idea when Sei*zon will pop given it’s only being streamed on NNV. If Ebiten from last season is any indication, it’ll take pretty long.
Impressions:
Another mostly boring as sin episode. It did get significantly better in the last five or so minutes and wasn’t as insultingly cheap for most of it, but it was still pretty damn cheap and the direction remained utterly nonexistent. All of the stuff about Rin being a social outcast was also just moronic and reminded me of all those horrible harem shows that begin with "I never had any friends" and three episodes later the entire cast of Blossom is fighting over their manwich, but in this case, we began with her getting along with a bunch of different people then rewound things to try and say that she doesn’t get along with people. It might have worked at least a little better if they hadn’t overplayed it so painfully and just made her socially shy or given it some impetus instead of going straight from accosting random people to join their baseball team to running away screaming when confronted with the terror of another person, but alas.
Besides, that the two other things in the episode were Komari’s intro, and her entire deal is just "I’m a lovable imbecile with a squeaky voice," and the first hints about the world’s true nature. And by hints, I mean delivered with a sledgehammer. Great to see that we’re already hitting the terrible melodrama so soon! I don’t find Komari cute or amusing though and her shrill voice annoys me. Probably because everything about her is also delivered with the subtle grace and creativity of a sledgehammer to the face. At least she makes the director spend a little effort putting some energy into the show for whatever reason. It got all the way up to looking like a bad Jump show from the 90s at times!

Nice art, JC Staff.

But… but… but what about Jojo’s?
It had more telling than showing, a CG opening, insane directional choices, was noisy as fuck and the animation was as cheap as you’d expect from a JUMP show. All the things you love. You can’t miss out on that!
