2012 Bog Snorkeling Competition and Summer Season Preview

June 26th, 2012

It was summer a week ago. Now it’s just raining again.

As always, do try to remember that most shows most seasons are not going to be the greatest thing ever. In fact, the vast majority of shows are going to be mediocre to bad. They can still be fun to watch though. I have no idea how people work themselves into a frenzy every single season over a couple sentences blurb on a website, half of the time not even translated correctly. Stop that or I’m getting out the beating stick. I’m still going to watch the first episodes of just about everything because if nothing else, I do wholeheartedly believe in giving everything its fair chance to surprise me.  Even the worst premise or setting can be saved by great execution and the best setup can be damned by godawful writing and production. Like usual, I plan on doing a quick writeup after the premiere week(s) is over as well

I’ve put together a pack of the promos and CMs I could find. As usual, there are entirely too many. At least everything’s represented but Hakuouki, Driland, and Chitose.

Studio: Xebec
Genre: Action
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 1st

Summary:
The continuing adventures of a group of space lesbians with their clueless ‘Earth’ girl piloting mecha to protect and/or destroy the city. It’s often unclear which.

Personal Thoughts:
The wild mood swings of the first season didn’t particularly attract me… aaaand I hated just about every single one of the characters, in particular Madoka who cluelessly stumbled around like a weed-addled imbecile while everything magically worked out for her. Apparently after I abandoned ship, there were a number of flashbacks too. Thank you, but no. Saturdays are packed anyway.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Three ‘massage’ devices for the girls.

TARI TARI
http://taritari.jp/
Studio: PA Works
Genre: Drama
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 1st

Summary:
Wakana had always been involved with music as she was growing up, but after her mother died, she quit it entirely. With the help of her friends, she’s going to become involved in it once more and continue growing up.

Personal Thoughts:
Everything about this screams bland and generic. The director/writer’s a complete nobody, so I’ll just trot out the usual line for every PA Works show ever, which goes triply for all their teen coming of age dramas. I expect a strong start before devolving into absolutely nothing for the middle 80% of the show and then an underwhelming ending. Then again, this one’s not Okada, bane of writers, for once. These shows are rarely my thing anyway, if ever.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Another show that would be improved by adding a velociraptor.

La Storia Della Arcana Famiglia
http://www.arcanafamiglia.com/
Studio: JC Staff
Genre: Action
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 1st

Summary:
An organization protects the prosperous island of Regalo using the power of the Tarroco (tarot). To join the family and receive powers, one must throw away their past lives and dedicate themselves to the family. Their leader suddenly declares his retirement and holds a tournament called the Arcana Duelo to decide his successor, the husband for his daughter Felicita, and grant the winner one wish. As the holder of Lovers, which allows her to read people’s hearts, Felicita is allowed to join in order to learn the truth behind the Duelo and win her freedom.

Personal Thoughts:
Winner of the seasonal Seiha "Way To Copy Paste a Crappy Machine Translated Blurb Instead of Putting In Actual Effort" award. It particularly amused me that people thought è‡ªè¦å›£å“¡ meant vigilante in the English sense instead of the original hasn’t-been-used-in-English-since-about-1800 meaning, members of vigilance groups such as the neighborhood watch. Twits.
*ahem* JC Staff has been woefully awful at action lately, the writer is pretty awful (Freezing or Index1 being the ‘high’ points of his career), and the director’s not much better (Higurashi, Umineko, the terrible seasons of Nodame). Not a whole ton stands out otherwise either aside from the genders all being reversed. A bunch of characters with some kind of themed powers holding a tournament. But… Italian themed. Give the female lead a penis and it’d practically be the opening arc to a Jump show. Only with JC Staff. And slightly more fondling.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Home of the world’s longest cannoli.

Humanity Has Declined
http://www.maql.co.jp/special/jintai/
Studio: AIC ASTA
Genre: Adventure
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 1st

Summary:
A girl is born in the distant future, one of the last humans in existence. After graduating from school, she begins her job as a mediator between humans and the new race that fills the earth, tiny fairy-like creatures.

Personal Thoughts:
This seems to be the big one a lot of people are looking forward to thanks to being written by Tanaka Romeo, of various VN acclaim, so it’s my job to throw a wet towel on it. There’s no shortage of experienced staff at least, although both the director and writer’s works are split between good and bad stuff with the two most recent things they worked on together being Carnival Phantasm, and God Dolls. I’m not sure what that adds up to. The promos do seem a little on the pastoral side which never really excites me that much, although it does amuse me to see people calling it dark because it has uncooked chickens talking and read a half-assed obviously incomplete Wikipedia entry. God help those people if they saw something like Adventure Time. The sheer overwhelming darkness of that would break their minds.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Chitose Get You!
http://www.takeshobo.co.jp/sp/tv_chitose/
Studio: Silver Link
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 1st

Summary:
Chitose’s an 11 year old girl who has already decided that she’s going to marry an older man who works at city hall near the school, and plans all day of how to trick or trap him into becoming her husband.

Personal Thoughts:
Don’t worry, it’s just a gag comedy featuring things like trying to trick him into signing a marriage certificate. At least the original is. There’s no telling what Japan’s going to do with things. Also, comedy might be stretching it from what I glanced at. This is Silver Link though, and if nothing else they bring flair and artistic style to almost everything they do. This isn’t their usual team though, and the director’s a complete newbie. Hopefully they’ll be aggressive about spicing the humor up here because otherwise, it looks fairly bland and forgettable already.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Muv Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse
http://muv-luv-te-anime.com/
Studio: ixtl/Satelight
Genre: Action
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 1st

Summary:
Mankind has been fighting a losing war against the BETA for decades. There’s a new weapon in development that’s designed to be the ultimate weapon for winning the war. Two pilots from Japan and American are dispatched to help bring humanity last best hope to completion.

Personal Thoughts:
Sweet! It’s a Gonzo director! Now if only there were some giant aliens that looked like genitalia too! Yes, yes, it’s tangentially related to the ever-acclaimed Muv Luv. It’s also the red-haired stepchild that most people simply pretend doesn’t exist. The promos were also evenly split in their focus between slow pans over the form fitting suits and CG mechs, and nothing really gets me excited for a show like… stills and CG mechs. And tons of training exercises too? Be still my beating heart.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Not as subtle as Japan may think.

Love Songs
http://www.anime-utakoi.jp/
Studio: Tyo Animations
Genre: Romance
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 2nd

Summary:
A collection of comedic love stories based loosely on the Hyakunin Isshu, a collection of poetry from Japan’s medieval period.

Personal Thoughts:
This is JCStaff’s melodrama director (Kimikiss, Bakuman, H&C) so that’s already not a great start. Tyo is also a fairly poor studio without much to their name either, and even less that I would call technically well-made. Zero things actually. So without any actual promotional material, mediocre to poor people behind it, and the expectation of a lack of cohesion between episodes or short arcs, color me absolutely thrilled to the gills. Or the complete opposite. Whichever.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Yuruyuri♪♪
http://yuruyuri.com/
Studio: Dogakobo
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 2nd

Summary:
Sequel series. The continuing schooltime adventures of three hormone-addled lesbians in a world without the Y chromosome. And some other girl whose name escapes me.

Personal Thoughts:
Same staff so I imagine it’ll be more of the same. The first season had a great first episode then more or less pitched off a cliff soon afterwards thanks to a whole lot of dead space, poor comic timing, and jokes repeated ad nauseum. It still had a couple good moments most episodes, but too far apart to have any real staying power. I’m looking back over old posts and have absolutely no memory at all of most of these episodes. Most of the laughs came from whose-her-face always getting shafted in the opening bit. If they can keep the energy level high and do a better job mixing up jokes instead of grinding the same ones in over and over again, it’ll be enjoyable. I don’t have particularly high hopes though.

Preseason Swing Rating:

God of Misfortune!
http://www.binbogamiga.net/
Studio: Sunrise
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 4th

Summary:
Sakura has lived her entire life blessed with good fortune. Beautiful, rich, popular, there’s nothing she doesn’t have, and she believes that she deserves all of it. Her good fortune is creating an inbalance in the world, so a god of misfortune arrives to correct the balance. However, she’s not going to let it go without a fight, although it will force her to start opening her eyes to people in the world besides herself.

Personal Thoughts:
Sunrise is usually good for technical merits, buuuut the promo material was disturbingly full of speedlines and generic splash backgrounds. The rest of the staff here are newbies too. Okay, the head writer worked on Bleach and the Naruto Rock Lee spinoff, so that inspires all kinds of confidence. It seems like it could have some promise, but the painfully obvious moral lessons could get real old real fast unless they move right along through them, which Japan has not proven itself wont to doing. Hopefully it’ll surprise me, but I’m not holding my breath.

Moyashimon Returns!
http://kamosuzo2.tv/
Studio: Shirogumi/Telecom
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 5th

Summary:
Sequel series. The continuing college adventures of Tadayasu, who can see and speak to wild roaming bacteria.

Personal Thoughts:
I know I watched two or three episodes of the first season, but damned if I can remember a single thing about it, even why I stopped. It’s probably my noitaminA antibodies kicking in and suppressing everything noitaminA. That or the edutainment bits. I took a semester of Wines as an undergrad. I learned more about fermentation than I wanted to, and that was WITH getting to drink strange wines every Tuesday and Thursday at 10am. *ahem* Despite the original airing five years ago, they managed to assemble the same staff, although looking down the list, the original is the only thing of note any of those people did anyway. I doubt it’ll be too different from the original since it wasn’t particularly plot driven to begin with, but Japan’s been dicking up a whole lot of sequels lately. Whatevs, yo.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Three pigs-worth swarm of salmonella.

Summer Snow Rendezvous
http://natsuyuki.tv/
Studio: Dogakobo
Genre: Romance
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 5th

Summary:
Hazuki falls in love with an older woman who owns a flower shop who herself gave up on love after her husban died. He begins working there in order to get closer to her, but discovers that she’s still being unknowingly haunted by her husband’s ghost who doesn’t think Hazuki’s the right one for her.

Personal Thoughts:
Uneven studio, mediocre direction, noitaminA, and the usual "Moody Japanese Guy Idolizes Clueless Girl From a Distance Without Saying Or Doing Anything Until Maybe the Last Episode." And the twist is… they’re slightly older but still acting just like obnoxious children teenagers. Well, I’m sold. Or not. Well, since the story’s already done and in the books, at least it’ll probably actually finish. Probably. Never count Japan out when it comes to horrendously slow pacing. Little about this interests me and I find the ginormous fish-like eyes of the female lead frankly terrifying. I don’t see it surprising me by suddenly having things like a plot, or pacing, or anything happening besides long sequences of staring and/or being moody. Mainly because that’s what the promos are already full of. Exciting.

Preseason Swing Rating:

75% chance to be forgotten two weeks after it finishes.

Love, An Election, and Chocolate
http://www.koichoco.com/
Studio: AIC Build
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 5th

Summary:
Yuuki dreams of finding a girlfriend and loves baking sweets, even though his close friend hates chocolate. They’re members of the Food Club where they just sit around chatting, eating, and hanging out. During the school elections, one of the people running for president declares that they’re going to get rid of all useless clubs, so Yuuki impetuously decides to run himself and is caught up in the chaos of school elections.

Personal Thoughts:
Well, at least the writer has a lot of experience, mostly with Shaft/Silver Link, although it’s a pretty even mix of decent and godawful. Still, I feel like we’ve already passed out yearly quota for shows about a guy in a club about doing nothing full of cute girls fawning over him. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the porn game roots either. Since the promo begins with a shot of thighs, then breasts, then cat ears, then back to thighs with the panty shot just barely out of view, there’s no mistaking what the focus is here. I guess the main way it distinguishes itself is that it’s NOT based on an LN.

One of Them Is My Sister!
http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/nakaimo/
Studio: Gokumi
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 5th

Summary:
In order to inherit his father’s fortunes, Shougou needs to find a wife before he graduates. He transfers into a school looking for one and is immediately surrounded by cute girls who are immediately attracted to him. However, one of them claims to be his sister, he’s just not sure which one.

Personal Thoughts:
And here’s LN Type #2, stories about having sex with your sister. Let’s just run down the staff here. Director from kiss x sis, Nogizaka Haruka, and Fortune Arteriel, the writer from Chocotto Sister, Myself;Yourself, and A Bridge to Ayumu’s Butt, and the studio who brought us A-Channel and the Non-Rude Tits season of Saki. It’s like it’s made of mediocrity! Until Gokumi, at least they had things locked up for generic pandering nonsense though. With luck, it’ll be truly terrible. Without luck, it’ll be yet another one of any of the shows mentioned above.

Joshiraku
http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/joshiraku/
Studio: JC Staff
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 5th

Summary:
Based on a kind of Japanese stand-up comedy (rakugo) wherein a speaker tells a comic tale, but in this case, it’s a group of girls aimlessly talking and going off on random tangents.

Personal Thoughts:
Believe me, the urge to translate the title as "Girl Talk" was nearly overwhelming, but I caved to societal pressure for once. *ahem* Pure comedy is one of the few things that JC Staff consistently does well, at least compared to practically every other genre. This director’s done some great comedies too (HareGuu, Dokuro, Punie, Blood-C). The writer’s highly experienced too, although not too many comedies. It’s enough to be tentatively optimistic at least. JC Staff has been doing poorly enough over the last couple of years for me not to be any more excited than that. They just better spice up the visuals instead of it being bland Japanese stand-up… but with girls in PJs! The promo doesn’t really indicate that they will though.

Preseason Swing Rating:

The Aesthetics of an Antihero
http://kichiku.tv/
Studio: ARMS
Genre: Action
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 5th (Evening)

Summary:
Akatsuki was summoned to another world to save it. After defeating the demon lord there, he returned with the demon’s daught in tow. They’re recruited by BABEL into a school full of heroes who have saved worlds, just like he has. With a bunch of super-powered people running around, his hatred of being called a hero, and that he can’t stand seeng a girl cry, he soon gets into a brand new set of battles in his new school.

Personal Thoughts:
Oh, ARMS. Where do you find these people? Last season you recruited a porn director for Queen’s Blade, this season it’s someone whose only non-porn shows are the Ikkitousen OVA and the ever-forgettable Yoichi. This does have a pleasant surprise at writer at least, UFOTable’s old guy (Futakoi Alt, Shinobuden, Manabi Straight). That in itself is reason to be at least a tiny bit hopeful. ARMS certainly can do action, they just don’t like spending the budget to do so. With a competent writer handling things for them for once… who knows what might happen. Assuming he doesn’t completely phone it in at least. The promos could have also used a little more oomph, but they were far from the worst of the action set for the season. Then again, the website does have a little Flash ‘game’ where you can dress or undress the heroine in lingerie of your choice.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Having hope is just tempting fate.

That’s Why I Can’t Have Sex
http://boku-h.com/
Studio: feel
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 5th (Evening)

Summary:
Ryousuke’s an unabashed pervert, but a reaper falls into his lap and drains away his entire libido in order to maintain her connection to the human world.

Personal Thoughts:
And here’s LN Type #1, the magical girlfriend. Okay, so the above should probably get that distinction, but I got distracted by the porn director. But wait! This has that lovable scamp from M.O.E. doing the direction whose most recent work otherwise was the completely chaste Yosuga no Sora. What joy! Two for two on shows with porn directors for Thursday night AT-X shows! This head writer’s awful too with the aforementioned Sora and PapaKiki being the ‘standouts.’ Aaaand speaking of that, let’s not forget that PapaKiki’s one of about three shows ever that Feel’s made that could not be replaced by a parade of Cowboys cheerleaders doing jumping jacks and squats. Oh, and the first six seconds of the PV feature a naked girl in the shower, a girl in the rain, a naked girl in flames, a naked girl upside down, and the MC faceplanting into a vagina. The first six seconds. Thank you, and good night.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Six engorged cocks.

Campione!
http://www.campi-anime.com/
Studio: Diomedea
Genre: Action
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 6th

Summary:
While on vacation in Italy, Godou accidentally gets caught up in a battle between two gods and kills one, becoming a Campione, a god-slayer. He’s soon surrounded by other people (girls) interested in him and his new powers as well as those with more malevolent aims.

Personal Thoughts:
Here’s another curious one. This is 7Arc’s director (Nanoha, Sekirei, Asura, etc), plus a relatively prolific, but mostly awful writer, and to top it off, Diomedea, who the closest thing to animating an action show they’ve ever done is Polyphonica S. As I recall, there was one episode of decent action in that, but most of the show was about throwing shoes. Other than that though, everything about it screams utterly generic magical girlfriend fighting show. Some parts of the promo look slick, but most looks extremely cheap. It might turn out cool, but I’m betting on Diomedea’s usually mediocre production values and the poor writer to overwhelm whatever the director can bring. Let’s not forget that his last show was Dog Days either.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Runner up for most generic magical girlfriend show of the season.

Driland Exploration
http://www.toei-anim.co.jp/tv/Driland/
Studio: Toei Animation
Genre: Adventure
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 7th

Summary:
A princess in the world of Driland decides to become an adventurer and treasure hunter. She sets off with her assistant in tow and gathers other people on her adventure. Meanwhile, an evil begins to stir.

Personal Thoughts:
Nothing special here. Just the token cellphone/MMO cash-in of the season. Toei’s cheap and almost always focused on kid’s shows anyway, which makes this one airing in the evening all the more confusing. What exactly is the market for this show? With the super deformed character designs, it seems like it’d fit right in elsewhere. Did they make the show expecting it to have a completely different air time? Well, maybe it’s just going to end up being a silly parody. That’s about the best I think anybody can hope for here.

Preseason Swing Rating:

This cannot possibly be good.

Dog Days’
http://www.dogdays.tv/
Studio: Seven Arcs
Genre: Adventure
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 7th

Summary:
Sequel series. Shinku’s transported back into the world of dog and cat people fighting silly wars for picnic money and hanging around. This time he brings his friends from Earth and meets yet more strange animal girls.

Personal Thoughts:
My disappointment with the first season was… how to say… palpable. I particularly liked the prediction that WILL COME TRUE NO MATTER WHAT that was just completely forgotten about. It did have a couple good moments, but most of it was spent angrily waiting for something to happen, and when it finally did, it made no sense. Then they had a concert about it. Oi. The same writer’s back, so that’s annoying, but oddly enough, they’ve got Deen’s old-school director (Simoun, Mission-E, Ranma) handling it while the previous director’s off doing Campione. Well, at least he knows action. In theory. I expect very little from this but maybe some bad jokes about the dog people continuing to be treated like dogs and I doubt it’ll disappoint as far as that’s concerned. Whether it’ll be worth keeping up with on a packed Saturday though…

Preseason Swing Rating:

What about the nuclear bird people?

Sword Art Online
http://www.swordart-online.net/
Studio: A-1
Genre: Action
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 7th

Summary:
In the near future, an MMORPG is created that lets players experience the game as if it were real. However, the creater locks all its players in the game with the threat that dying in it will cost them their lives in the real world as well. If they wish to escape, they must defeat the game’s final boss.

Personal Thoughts:
Good lord, this wasn’t even a creative premise back in 2006 with that horrid Stay Alive movie whose catchphrase is still mocked to this day. We also have A-1, the true masters of the fancy promos, strong starts and quick collapses with direction by someone whose only other show is Occult Academy. Not a staff and studio that inspires a great deal of hope. And as is the usual LN case, it’s the one male surrounded by a veritable brood of squawking blushing females to cater to every fetish, all wanting to polish his junk. The more I read about it, the more shameless it sounds, but for some reason, it seems to be well-regarded. Probably for the tits. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Hearts Connect
http://kokoro-connect.com/
Studio: Silver Link
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 7th

Summary:
Five members of a club enjoy just hanging out and having fun, but one day, they mysteriously begin seemingly randomly switching bodies.

Personal Thoughts:
I get to cheat since the first half of the first episode already got put up and hoo boy, was that a snooze fest. It lacks any of Silver Link’s usual flair towards art or direction and everything else was just plain boring and plain as sin. Aside from the body switching thing, everything else is as cookie cutter as it comes, right down to the dull MC introducing the entire milquetoast cast over stills of them. If that was supposed to hook me and get me interested in the show, it failed. Badly. I doubt the second half of the episode is going to change my mind either, but we’ll see. Whatever else the gimmick doesn, it probably can’t hurt.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Horizon on the Middle of Nowhere
http://genesis-horizon.net/
Studio: Sunrise
Genre: Action
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 7th

Summary:
Sequel series. The continuing adventures of the super powered students of Musashi at war with just about every other country in the world. This time facing an invasion of baseball Spaniards.

Personal Thoughts:
Same staff and studio here, so no major surprises expected. The first season did have a number of early/middle pacing problems but pulled things together for a rather satisfactory end and always had a strong cast of characters. If this season can pick up where the last one left off and not get bogged down again in flashbacks, arcs about characters only tangentially related to the main cast who just go poofing off and are forgotten again after three episodes, or extended exposition/posturing for 5-10 straight minutes at a time, it should be a fun ride. And yes, I am aware that I might as well be wishing for a unicorn that craps bacon cheeseburgers while I’m at it, but hopefully Sunrise learned from the first season.

The Ambition of Oda Nobuna
http://odanobuna.com/
Studio: Gokumi/Madhouse
Genre: Adventure
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 8th

Summary:
Sagara suddenly finds himself thrown back into an alternate history. He’s recruited by Oda Nobuna to be her vassal. She’s out to conquer the world, but he wants history to just go back to what he thinks it is.

Personal Thoughts:
What really impressed me about this one is that in the promos, there’s a girl with a metal breastplate that jiggles. Way to not let physics get in the way of your fanservice. This also combines two absolutely fantastic recent trends, gender bending historical figures, and magical girlfriend LNs. How can’t such a creative idea go wrong? Anyway. Staff’s terrible. Director of nothing before and writer of such classics as Gift, Sacred Blacksmith, and Kanokon. The promos actually kind of look okay, at least better than the staff would indicate, but the CG soldiers disturb me. Is that really what you want to be advertising? Expectations are not high.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Hakuouki – Dawn Chapter
http://www.geneonuniversal.jp/rondorobe/anime/hakuoki/
Studio: Deen
Genre: Pretty Boys
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 9th (Pre-broadcast special on the 2nd)

Summary:
‘Sequel’ series.Takes place before the ten months before the initial series. A young man accidentally gets caught up with the group that would later become the Shinsengumi when they arrive in Kyoto and gets drawn into their battles against demons, undead, and whatnot.

Personal Thoughts:
They removed the female and tossed in another moody pretty boy in her place? Genius! Exact same staff as the others, so I see no reason it would be particularly different from them. Aside from being a prequel since you pretty much already have a good idea how things are going to turn out. Also, the removal of the doe-eyed hapless heroine from the show to stand there and gape at things. As the third Hakuouki series in the last three years, I’m pretty sure everybody knows what they’re getting at this point. Beautiful brooding men with chins you could use to cut plywood.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Show most likely to contain sex in a very uncomfortable place.

Ebiten
http://ebiten.jp/
Studio: AIC Classic
Genre: Comedy
Staff/Cast Information
Premieres July 14th

Summary:
Noya wanted to join his schools Astronomy Club, but after misreading a sign, he accidentally wandered into a literally underground club of nothing but obsessed nerd girls and has trouble getting back out.

Personal Thoughts:
In a true twist for this season, this club adaptation isn’t based on an LN. Not that anybody can probably tell. I’ve lost count of how many shows there are about a hapless socially dysfunctional guy in a club of ‘wacky’ girls. This one has some weird staff too. The director from Sengoku Maidens and the writer that handled Persona 4 and both seasons of SoraOto. Also Jewel Pet while we’re at it. So… I guess there’s at least a decent chance they’ll be able to handle a comedy? I’ve lost track of which of AIC’s divisions are good and bad at this point too. The show also only has an online broadcast scheduled at the moment like Upotte did.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Fountains of stars spewing everywhere.

Final Thoughts:

Ye lords. I feel like halfway through that I hit a run where every other show involved a magic girlfriend, or a club of 0-2 male(s) and N females… and/or having sex with your sister. Aaaaah, light novels. When will you catch up to the west, dump the magical girlfriends and just be about having sultry vampire boyfriends? Mmmm. Sultry vampires. Wait, what was I talking about again? Ahem. After how many shows this last season collapsed in the later going and the general dearth of action in general, I’m hopeful at least one of these will turn out well and it does seem to be curiously void of most of the maudlin melodrama which pains me so. Or maybe I just really really want the current season to be over.

I’m also going to be gone late July 5th through July 8th due to some family reasons, so things will be delayed a bit during that span, although it’s mostly just a bunch of Saturday shows although the AT-X Thursday night shows may get caught in it too. I have no idea what my internet connection situation will be like, but hopefully it’ll just mean things will be delayed until the evening. At worst, things will just go up in a spew on Sunday after I get back. Such is life.

My comments, for what they’re worth.

Jintai: The original novel is extremely good. The protagonist is really likeable and the story progresses more like an off-kilter children’s fantasy novel than your average LN… or more like, it has none of the usual LN tropes at all, pretty much. It’s also extremely well-written and full of meta-fictional humor that I’m more or less certain will be lost somewhere along the line in the transition to a visual format. That said, I think the character designs, backgrounds, and overall aesthetic for the adaptation look pretty nice, so I’m cautiously optimistic that it will be fun for fans of the original at least. Then again, the director is Kishi. Oh, Kishi, what can I even say about you.

Also, Nakahara Mai as the protagonist! If nothing else I have to watch it for this.

Total Eclipse: The source material isn’t very good and has no real plot. It’s mostly for Muvluv fanboys who just want to read more stuff in the same setting as Alternative. It’s worth noting that the director is a huge fan of Muvluv himself and has wanted to direct a Muvluv anime for some years now, so he at least has passion working for him. Given the almost assuredly-awful production values and the lackluster source material, though, I don’t think he has much of a chance of turning it into something decent. At least the cast is good.

Moyashimon 2: I liked s1 but I have no idea if I’d still like it 5 years later. I guess I’ll get to find out! Amusingly the OP is by ClariS this time around.

Koichoco: According to everyone, the original game is unbelievably bad and has one of the most annoying main heroines of all time. There’s probably no hope for this unless it goes the “hilariously bad” route and with AIC I don’t really see that happening.

Joshiraku: Wasn’t aware of the director until now, I’ve always liked his work. Well, not Ikamusume. The manga is by the same guy as Zetsubou Sensei though and that just consists of increasingly awful puns for hundreds of chapters. Dunno.

Hagure Yuusha: Kingetsu didn’t manage to save Hyakka Ryouran and I don’t think he’ll manage to save this. I’ll be waiting for his new eroge (which may or may not come out this year after being in development hell for over a decade at this point) or for him to do another original TV series with ufotable (unlikely seeing as ufotable seems to be dedicated to riding the TYPE-MOON gravy train nowadays).

BokuH: My tangled love affair with m.o.e. continues. The promo had some decent animation (and it is by feel.) but who knows how long that will last.

SAO: I don’t understand why people care about this either. It really is just the extremely cheesy YOU DIE IN THE GAME YOU DIE IN REAL LIFE plot and it calls to mind freaking .hack more than anything really.

Ebiten: Despite being written by SCA-JI, apparently the source manga isn’t really that good. Oh well. I’ll check it out if only because it looks like this is the closest we’re going to get to Seizon s2 for the time being, as DEEN seems to have forgotten that they actually announced that at some point. They even used the Seizon OP in one of the promos.

      “full of meta-fictional humor”
Please explain what you mean. Usually this just means characters calling themselves and each other ‘tsundere’.

      • Moogy says:

Hmm, I guess meant meta-textual, not meta-fictional. There’s a lot of jokes you need to be familiar with Japanese and how Japanese writing works in order to understand. The entire thing is very playful and there are a lot of layers of depth to the way it’s written, so you just need to be smart and paying attention to get it, I guess.

It’s nothing like any other LN ever written, so please don’t approach it from that standpoint. Romeo is the best writer who has ever worked in otaku-oriented fiction and I think Jintai more than anything shows just how far ahead he is of everyone else. Well, CROSS+CHANNEL, too, obviously, but Jintai does it in a more subtle way throughout.

Oh, also, SAO predates .hack, just barely.

Oh, also, SAO predates .hack, just barely.

        Release dates:
        .hack//SIGN (anime): 2002
Sword Art Online Vol. 1 (LN): 2009

I honestly don’t see what makes you believe that SAO predates .hack.

        • Dynellen says:

SAO was originally published as a web novel slightly before .hack (afaik), but was published in LN format only years later.

        • Anonymous says:

This. The web novel was released at almost the exact same time .hack was.

  • Hinano says:

Arcana Famiglia’s an otome game turned anime.
It has such award winning themes such as childhood friends, incest and pedophilia (one of the guys is like 47 and you can get with him in the game. you = 16 year old heroine.)

    • Aroduc says:

I know, in my search, I found a blog that had summarized literally every single route of the game as well as every ending. It was a little daunting.

  • Kadi says:

Campione’s most likely going to… “be bad”. The novels already offer too many opportunities, like infodumping mythology in long, expository speeches as a feature. In the middle of combat… oh joy. Have I mentioned long stretches of “slice of life”, likely to kill the pacing? How about flashbacks… volume-long flashbacks! So inviting! I’m kind of looking forward to how bad it’s going to be. Probably not bad enough.

On the upside, there are decent heroines, some tentative character development and no exponential power development. Also, the female leads bullies and blackmails the rest of the girls into submission…

  • Nanaya says:

    >in a world without the X chromosome. [yuriyuri]

Don’t you mean the Y chromosome? X = female, Y = male. My memory of genetics is vague, but I’m fairly certain no X chromosome = everyone is steroidy-muscleheads with very deep voices.

    • Aroduc says:

      Silence!

    • Anise_Punter says:

No X’s = instant lethal mutation, so it would be like if every show this season was Zombie 2.

Source material for SAO was eh, but I’ll take “eh” over what I’ve seen for Ebiten (meh with fanservice) or Binbougami-ga (just bad) or Yuru Yuri (too much other characters besides whose-her-nose). I thought Joshiraku was enjoyable, but I am a sucker for terrible, terrible puns.

I say I’d take SAO over these but I’m sure I will just end up watching them all anyway, except Horizon. I don’t have enough weed to consider watching Horizon.

  • Anise_Punter says:

Yuru Yuri 2 better have the red one in it, what’s her face, she was the best one. And it better shoot the glasses one into the sun.

If JC Staff turns Joshiraku into Kill Me Baby 2 I’m all for seeing their studio burned down.

  • Nanaya says:

Ok, now that I’m done proofing this for more BUTCHERY OF BASIC SCIENCE… *ahem*

    Moyashimon:
The series where he can see cartoony single-cell stuff, somewhat-educational. What most people remember about it was completely and totally falling for the trap twist near the end. Peoples reactions to that reveal were some of the funniest I’ve ever seen from a series.

    Campione:
Actually has surprisingly good potential to be a solid, quick-paced action show spliced with decent comedy, looking through what’s been tl’d. Pity it also has massive potential to be dragged out horribly and focused on the aspects that don’t lend well to a visual, timed, action-centered media. Going for a more episodic style in pacing instead of sub-arcs could be a boon for this series.

    Sword Art Online:
To be totally honest, I liked the first volume of it, and I usually hate this premise. Campione comment applies to this as well, minus the comedy.

Nothing else of interest to see here, move along, move along.

  • I think there’s an outside chance that Hagure Yuusha could end up being good. It maybe will have something of the same feel that Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou had.

It’s a harem show, but the guy is gar and the girls are all formidable fighters, and there will be a lot of action. If we’re lucky, it’ll be decent.

  • universalperson says:

Guess I’ll be waiting for the meguca movies.

  • The Phantom says:

Looking forward to: boku wa, dog days, horizon.

Deserve a first look: Arcana, Jinrui, Chocolate, nakaimo, estetica, Campione, sword art, ebiten.

So yea it looks like a promising season, now lets cross our fingers :D

  • ewan says:

I’m happy that the shows this next season are either high school comedy action stuff and jump shows… No merchandising shows whatsoever.

I just don’t get AIC, they’ve done acchi kochi(which has no fanservice, boob gags or shit). Now, one of their divisions responsible for some gay anime is doing a seitokai ripoff with full of autistic girls and panties…

Also, NO SHAFT SERIES THIS SEASON! WHY?! ONLY SHINBO WANNABE OOUMA!

    • anise_punter says:

AIC had the same division do Geijutsuka Art Design (wonderful) and Countless Cat Gods (a total mess that could have been something), so even accounting for all the different divisions, you never know what you’re going to get with them.

  • Rewriter says:

I guess I’ll continue watching Horizon—maybe SAO for the action; every other show’s premise seems shitty.

  • Dynellen says:

This season seems mildly promising but then again so did the previous one before it descended to mediocrity/boredom few eps in for most of the shows.

At least there’s more action, I’ve really missed that during this season. Well, whether I’ll be disappointed by most shows this season again or not at least I can count on Horizon s2 to entertain me.

  • Apathy says:

    …Ah, Yukikaze’s Divine Breasts returns.

  • KLAC_OF_PERSONALITY says:

hmm among got on hmm election chocolate, dog days 2, yuru yuri 2, & Dakara Boku-ha, H ga Dekinai.

give so likely Dakara Boku-ha, H ga Dekinai is 2nd coming of DxD.

  • Chen says:

    TOSHINO KYOUKO

    That is all.

  • Silentbrick says:

Well, another season where I see absolutely nothing I want to watch. Guess it’s a good thing I’m switching to offshore rigs so the lack of being able to follow a series doesn’t hurt me.

    Bleh.

  • Wilfriback says:

The first half of your SAO’s impression was somehow good until ” And as is the usual LN case, it’s the one male surrounded by a veritable brood of squawking blushing females to cater to every fetish, all wanting to polish his junk. The more I read about it, the more shameless it sounds, but for some reason, it seems to be well-regarded. Probably for the tits. Wouldn’t be the first time.”

Yeah, until that part that made it look fail lol.

  • Totali says:

    “Whatevs, yo.”

    You’re a hipster and I hate you.

  • Kefit says:

Lot’s of stuff I’ll start watching lots of stuff I’ll probably drop. I need to watch Jintai so I can throw wet towels in Moogy’s face the entire time. I’m foolishly optimistic that Dog Days s2 might possibly have a plot of some kind at some point maybe. I’m all for seeing how bad this sister fucking LN is, and the M.O.E. LN is sure to be magical. Hanasaku Iroha was amusing in a number of ways, so I have to see if Tari Tari can keep up with that fine predecessor. I am contractually obliged to watch all sengoku turned into girls shows, so there’s that. I’m that weird guy who didn’t like Muvluv Alt much but I have to see how awful Total Eclipse is. Accel World is starting to get pretty fucking hilarious, hopefully SAO follows suit. And Koichoco has nice designs so.

Yeesh that’s a lot of shows I have to check out. Maybe I’ll mercifully forget about some of them since my schedule right now is pretty busy.
