Upotte!! #03 — Edutainment

April 21st, 2012

I refuse to learn anything from Xebec.

Semi-Impressions:

Fantastic. The entire first quarter of the episode was them just being naked and rubbing each other. It wasn’t even Xebec enough to be amusing. Almost the entire rest of the episode was spent on edutainment and I’m not nearly enough (or any) of a gun nut to be able to clap my hands like a harp seal and go "Oh mah gaw! Bang shooty things that I recognize!" So with one episode that was all sex jokes, one episode that was half-assed action, and one that was basically a string of lectures, I’m really not sure what the show’s trying to do. I wish it was trying to… oh, I don’t know… be funny, but apparently that’s just the fevered pipe dream of an addled mind.

Also, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that a bunch of Japanese children badly singing Row Row Row Your Boat didn’t make a vein begin throbbing on my forehead and a pink mist descend over my vision. The bagpipes not long after that only made matters worse.

So unless there are any particularly compelling and/or strenuous objections, with both Korra having quite a good episode today and YJ being solid in general since its return from its break (and its ‘season’ resetting next week anyway) while this had… this, I think I’m about ready to give a little western Saturday experiment a try for the season. I just need to find all the scattered parts of my TV Capture card and remember how to put it back together again. A veritable Legend of Zelda-esque adventure through my apartment if ever there was one.

Preview:

Some nonsense about idols.

11 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

    sharkelf and israel next week?

  • Jack says:

    My question is this:

These girls are guns. Living, breathing, menstruating guns. What happens to their high school girl psychology when they are used to actually KILL someone?

What happens if a bad person (murder) gets a hold of them and uses them to wipe out 15 people sitting in a restaurant minding their own business?

I’m hoping Season 2 will address my questions.

    • U.Renko says:

Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.
      Or something like that.

Not sure what happens when guns are people though…

    • longhaul says:

they cannot hurt people unless someone is using them, and they go by the will of the person using them

as far as high school psychology, they do not seem to actually be the age related to the grade they are in

both m16 and m14 make comments about Vietnam experiences for example

      • Jack says:

…both m16 and m14 make comments about Vietnam experiences for example…

Ah…I must have missed that. Thanks.

Hmmm…Well, I realize they don’t kill unless someone is using them, but the premise itself, anthropomorphizing girls/guns/volence, seems odd to me at first blush. I realize this is just a cartoon and I shouldn’t take it seriously — I mean come on, we’re here for the bath scenes not the broader philosophical questions — but still…

I suppose it’s no different then training high school girls to be assassins.

Well, it should be interesting to see if the male teacher loads his bullets into one of the guns for target practice.

        • longhaul says:

oh sorry, they make those comments at separate times farther along in the manga than where the anime is at

    • sams says:

You don’t need to know that to enjoy the premise of the show, take like Ben-To and don’t ask questions.

  • AfroSquirrel says:

Yeah, I think making Saturdays Korra days is the way to go.

  • NightShadow2239 says:

I swear, this looked like the gun was Photoshopped in.

Please don’t stop reviewing it … please :D

This was probably a filler episode or one intended to develop L-chan a little bit before the coming episode with the SharkElf and Galil, which are probably going to be hilarious.

M-16 sexual perversion is off the charts and I was feeling like in Queen’s Blade for a second at the start.
