Mysterious Girlfriend X #01 — Star Mars: A Nem Hope

April 7th, 2012

The stranger part is how the "Star Mars" poster would randomly disappear.

Impressions:

In case you had any doubt what this show is all about with the imagery of people being covered in spit and sexual imagery of flowers being pollinated and CG dreams about dancing (since it’s Japan, I just assume that’s sexual), the ED is helpfully here to remind you with a minute and a half of girls drooling. I just feel like that’s a good place to start. Continuing our trend of shows from various decades, we have Hoods representing the 1990s with a vengeance. Even the musical direction too is that slightly too melodramatic style that we grew out of 20 years ago where you can play "Spot the Tuba" as it whoomphs along. You’d think the bad retro style would give them more cash to actually animate the show too, but you’d be wrong. It got especially bad towards the end when they were recycling footage from earlier in the episode. Way to break the budget here, Hoods.

And then we move to the characters, starring your usual protagonist with zero personality but engages in some manner of bizarre behavior because otherwise the show wouldn’t have a gimmick and would therefore have to rely on being good, and the female lead who sounds like she wakes up in the morning and gargles cigarettes. Luckily too, we get to hear quite a bit of her through the second half as she sits down and explains the show’s gimmick. Don’t you just love exposition? And then to show his dedication to his newfound spit buddy, he did the unthinkable… sacrificed something never previously mentioned before. Yeah. Moving.

Sweaty balls time!
