Happy Bread #03 — Lasers Beat Bread
April 26th, 2012
Can you stop trying to solve all problems with bread?
I did end up flipping through SenColle while eating lunch. It was about Masamune getting tricked into helping mobsters, arrested, attacked by inmates, escaping, and then going for revenge. It was hilarious how they went out of their way to not show blood/violence though and that she backed down from killing him at the end. I guess it was to set her up as Nobunaga’s rival, but just confirms to me that the show has no good idea what it’s doing or where it’s going at all. Without cohesion, creativity, wit, production, or characters that even characters and tone that last more than a single episode, I don’t see it getting better any time soon.
Impressions:
Well, this was different. Blowing up the bread oven was probably why. Aside from the storm washing up Kaguya and taking out their chimney, this episode could’ve been (and probably would’ve been a better substitute for) the first one. At least the show’s finally got a plot. Not that I hate the sisters, but I have no idea what their purpose is other than to fawn over Rick and bread… and we did not need two whole episodes for that. This week, instead of just bread bread bread bread bread, Kaguya shows up, her necklace glows, royal soldiers try to kill her, a pirate fleet begins attacking the island, Ex-X shoots lasers (both of the triangulation and of the ship-destroying varieties), and they flashback to Rick washing up on the island with amnesia himself, etc. So yeah… a bit more happens this week than the last two episodes combined.
Don’t misunderstand, it was still far from good, but it was much much closer to the generic fluff RPG adaptation I was expecting from the start and earns it another week past SenColle’s cutoff thanks to managing to find direction and purpose. Lasers improve everything. I’m still not sure it’ll last too much longer beyond that, but if the preview for next week’s any indication, it’ll continue to improve by picking up remaining party members instead of continuing to futz around over bread. Hopefully as pirates and mecha-girls and fighting cat-waitresses take over the show from the bakers, the budget will improve a bit too. …Wouldn’t that be the day? Sigh.
Preview:
Xiaomei joins the party.

Baking bread, but with lasers… brilliant!
