Crawl! Nyarlko #04 — Extraneous Characters
April 30th, 2012
Wow. Aren’t we the boring bunch.
FYI, this broadcast was delayed by 30 minutes (not that Crunchyroll pays attention to that) and Zetman’s broadcast was delayed by an hour. Fun.
Impressions:
Ugh. This episode was mainly centered on the introduction of three new characters and not one of them was even remotely amusing. There’s Mahiro’s mother, cut from the same cloth as Keroro’s Aki and a million other anime mothers, but not overplayed enough to really distinguish her rule of violence from Mahiro besides maybe slightly more psychological torment. She brandishes 8 forks. That’s 8 times as hilarious. She’s also apparently a devil hunter because… why not. Not that they made any jokes using it besides "She’s a devil hunter." Hilarious. Same thing they did with "she plays video games." I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again. Overplay this stuff, damn it. You’re a screwball comedy. Do something with this crap you introduce.
*Ahem* Second, we have Hastur. And that’s about all there is to say about his personality. Then there’s Cthulu, who just lurked in the background the entire episode. Granted, she wasn’t trying to be funny, but it just goes to show that the episode kept forgetting that it was a comedy and tried to build tension. Why are you even trying? So no, it was not a good episode and probably the worst of the lot so far. Maybe the novelty is gone, maybe it’s just that half the episode was basically recycling the same jokes yet again of X declaring Y to be their spouse and X cooking Y which is some otherworldly reference while every part of the second half with Hastur was a great big load of nothing. No energy, no comedy, nada. Was the punchline supposed to be that it was a male? Because the ED already showed that one a month ago.

Staring blankly.
