Impressions:
Well aren’t we the strange beast. Satelight brought out their big guns for the CG too. I won’t go so far as to say that it looks good, but there’s really no comparison between this and say… the clumsily rotoscoped concert scenes in Symphogear. It’s still all got that awkward overanimated distinctive CGness that clashes against everything else though. The production otherwise is good, but not great. They are trying a little too hard to make the idols stand out from the dull lifeless dystopic world, but the entire premise is just one giant "idols are the best thing ever" wankoff to begin with and the show is more obsessed with driving that message in than actually doing anything with the characters, being funny, being amusing, anything really.
Which brings us to the actual content. At least for this episode, the whole "idols fighting against the world" thing is just backdrop and about 3 minutes of intro hook. The remaining lion’s share of the episode is just a very bland "girls want to become idols" bit. But daddy says no and is standing in the way of her dream. The other two have flashbacks or confrontations to their own backgrounds, but both combined last less time than it took you to read this sentence. So yeah… girls practicing to be idols, daddy saying "No being an idol!" and then we decide to follow our dream after all. I can think of better ways to spend 20 minutes. Maybe it’ll change in coming episodes, but since they’re all incompetent in their own ways, I’m betting that there’s a whole lot of "idol training" ahead instead of anything that’d actually be interesting to watch.
