A Summer Tinged Miracle #01 — Could Use More Daleks

March 31st, 2012

It could use a lot of things.

There was a live preairing special on Niconico today that I was unaware of. Oopsies. The real broadcast begins on Thursday April 5th.

Impressions:

God. This show. It reminds me a lot of Uta Kata, only without the character designs, introductions, build up, direction, production, life lessons, or gimik’s burning dedication to the panty shot. Basically everything that made Uta Kata’s excessive high school angsting actually develop and function. This just throws you right into a bunch of characters whining about how nobody else understands their teenage torment and then rolls around in it like a pig in mud. The initial introduction to two of the main characters is them having a fight over skipping soft tennis practice. And complaining about that eats up most of the entire first goddamned half of the episode. Then it’s revealed that… *gasp* one is transferring away! We’re teenagers! This stuff is totally serious and matters! Maybe with a little actual introduction to the characters and establishing their relationships first, it would, but no. No such niceties.

And then they all touch a magic rock and fly off into the sky to fight the forces of the Glorax The All Conquerer. But it’s nice to know that even when they’re shocked to find themselves a mile up in the air, teenage angst is still the first thing that comes to their minds. And as soon as they land, one of them storms off again because "Magically floating in the sky? Who cares. She doesn’t understand how I feeeeeeeel."

At least it’s a Sunrise show and the production is certainly above average. It’s still not going to wow or amaze anybody though. The music’s competent too. I’m done saying nice things now. This just dumps you right into the middle of bad teenage melodrama and then spends the whole episode wallowing in it aside from a small bit where they’re probably having a radioactive rock induced hallucination that might have been supposed to reconcile them if they didn’t immediately dive right back into the melodrama after it finished.

Not everyone is as wise and familiar with obscure shows from 2004 as you are, Aroduc, but I’ll take your word for it. When was the last time Sunrise made a good show, am I right?

  • Phocus says:

So this is the Sphere anime, eh. Cute girls doing cute things.

    • Benigmatica says:

Yeah, compared and contrast to a Weiß anime where they do bad things like killing and stuff… and it’s horrible that Koyasu didn’t care about quality!
