Persona 4 #18 — The Faceless Lady
February 9th, 2012
Surely nothing bad will happen to Nanako at the end of the next episode now.
Impressions:
Completely by the numbers Nanako and Dojima Links without really any of the personal touches they’ve been tossing in for the other Links. It’s actually pretty disappointing because I have liked most of the adaptive changes they’ve made, so seeing this so… completely identical to the game was rather boring. The production this week also seemed jankier than usual, but it could have just been how little interesting was going on which leaves my attention open to wander even more than usual. At least the song through the make-up and ED was nice and not overly intrusive.
*Ahem he says in place of a transition* They could’ve done so much more to really show how Nanako’s life changed when her mother died, and instead they decided to go the route where Nanako’s mother was an amorphous, faceless blob. I’ll never understand why Japan seems to reluctant to show character’s faces like this. You’re not being clever and turning them into some amorphous faceless blob just gets in the way of them being an actual character. She’s not a person when she has a glare of light for a face or her head is conveniently chopped off in every image, she’s just a transparent plot device. Would showing her smiling really have been worse than "faceless woman constantly emitting solar flares?"
Then again, given what light beams usually cover up, maybe it means that she has nipples for eyes. Or has using too much of that radioactive Chinese off-market Vagisil.

That whole faceless dead mother thing should really be a trope, considering how ubiquitous it in anime.
