Black★Rock Shooter #02 — Subtle Scars
February 9th, 2012
Nice giant heart carved into your chest there, Yomi.
Impressions:
My plan was to just kind of flip through this looking for the Otherworld scenes, pull those out, make a few pithy comments and call it a day, but they ruined that by actually doing a decent job of integrating them into the real world for the first time through most of the last third of the episode, so my little ‘digest’ ended up being almost half as long as the episode anyway. That kind of sucked away my will to be precise with the editing… not to mention forced me to go back and actually… well… it’d be a stretch to say I paid attention to the first half, but at least I technically watched it. Yomi and Kuroi still bore me to tears and every moment with them is a moment I wish someone was choking them with macarons. There’s not a good base for all the melodrama to actually have any effect. Their default state is one step above cutting themselves to Green Day. Kagari’s not much better in terms of character foundation, but at least watching her torture and manipulate Yomi is more amusing than Kuroi moping in a corner. Throw yourself down the stairs for attention, Kuroi, and I’ll reevaluate you.
Still, another significant step up for Black Rock Shooter. Color me shocked. The melodrama is still about eight notches too high for where the show should be, but they actually handled the mix between the two worlds fairly well this week and let the two play off each other instead of being completely and utterly dissociated… for at least a third of it. Maybe next week it’ll graduate to me paying attention for the full twenty minutes. It took Saya protecting meatgrindering most of the village before Blood-C got to that point.

In a way, I think your very last comment after the preview was the biggest slam of the show. That’s certainly how I reacted to it.
