Space #02 — Rest of Title Not Applicable

January 14th, 2012

I’ll add the rest of the title if the show manages to ever add those elements.

Impressions:

And the search for something on Saturdays that doesn’t make me want to just go back to sleep continues. At least they actually made it into space this week, and it only took them half the episode to get there. The entirety of the first half could be summarized as "Oh no, kidnappers" and "Shoot guns by pulling the trigger." And yet, it was more eventful than the second half. We do not need to see every single little triviality of the universe. That is not how you create a setting, particularly a science fiction one. It’s space. They’re on a space ship. You can gloss over things. Star Trek didn’t begin with an inch by inch tour of the Enterprise and 10 minutes on how phasers work followed by a detailed tour of how Wesley would perform a scan. Go fly into a space net and get humanity put on trial by a capricious, vaguely effeminate demiurge already. If you need to explain anything, call it a tachyon burst and then give it a folksy metaphor, like "putting too many sharks in a room full of rocking chairs."

It would also help matters if characters had any kind of personality. Sure, they’re not angsty, but thus far, all most of them have done is spew out exposition. Marika being the exception, who has stood there and listened to it with less emotional range than your average silent RPG protagonist. Of course, that does get back to the core problem with this show thus far; Nothing’s happening. It’s all setup but with no purpose and no drive… and therefore, no reason to care about it. It’s doing nothing to invest the audience in the characters or the story. In fact there’s not even a story yet, just unnecessary futzing around. Hopefully Brave 10 will have a decent episode so I can pitch this and not look back.

If you’re reading this, it means that I forgot to change the template.

  • AfroSquirrel says:

“putting too many sharks in a room full of rocking chairs.”

Hmm, when is the next MythBusters ‘idioms and analogies’ episode?

  • Kaisos says:

Why are the Japanese still so ignorant as to how computers work? And why does the hair still not float in zero gravity? This isn’t the 1990s anymore.

  • MR.KLAC says:

still not yet temp by it give need 3 or 5 eps to really temp me to watch to see if expy of CAPTAIN MARVELOUS will happen.

  • Jack says:

    Space…how low can you go…

  • Maureen says:

Why doesn’t hair float? Oh, gosh, maybe having your hair float into your face in microgravity is a bad idea. Maybe, just maybe, we have a magical invention called hair mousse to keep your hair in place in difficult situations. If you use a strong enough formula, that hair ain’t going anywhere.

Or maybe they’ve got nice clear near-invisible hairnets on, to prevent their hair from going into all the electronic devices. It is the future, this could be done.

This is a fun, interesting show full of mystery. I’ve learned a lot about what’s going on, and it wasn’t the technical information. What I learned was how the girls work together, and what Kane was used to, and what’s going on behind the scenes that you can suss out with attention. On the rewatch after the show’s over, a lot will become visible that’s now hidden in plain sight.

You have to be patient. Nadesico and Shingu and Stellvia started “slow”, the way you think, but turned out to be starting very fast for the things you needed to know for later. I’m sorry you can’t enjoy a slice of life beginning to a Big Damn Adventure, but it worked for Tolkien just fine.
