Persona 4 #08 — Unhinged Jaws

November 24th, 2011

AIC, what are you doing?

Impressions:

What is with the show lately? If it had been playing up the humor and silliness the entire time, that’d be one thing, but these last couple episodes have had such a different tone from the previous six or so. The camping trip wasn’t one of the more serious parts anyway, and they used it here to sort of blast through Naoki’s Link in about a three minute span (not that I’m complaining in this case), but it was still just kind of popped up out of nowhere and was then immediately forgotten again. They also did the general recap and review there instead of retreating to Junes.

I stil really don’t like how they’ve completely reduced Kanji to nothing but a joke character. I wasn’t a huge fan of him to begin with, but him screaming and making ridiculous faces the entire time just annoys me and makes him look like a refugee from some bad Jump show. I kind of hope they just quietly fade him into the background once Rise’s stuff starts and we never have to hear from him again if this is how they’re going to handle his character.

Floppy hats.

i told you this episode would be more unfortunate. The sad thing is that almost nobody will care how badly this anime is treating Kanji.

It sickens me how many fanboys blindly praise these past two episodes without considering how much the anime has dumbed down Kanji’s arc. I’ve just read that, sadly, what is on TV is nothing but spectacle to bring out people’s emotions rather than allow them to think. That’s why most people simply laugh at the cheap jokes without realizing how much of an insult it is to the character. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one feeling this way, because one person said “there’s no need to over analyze it” when someone simply points out the negative impressions behind a portrayal and another person thinks that I’m overreacting.

  • Shinmarizu says:

It is a tragedy how Kanji is being displayed here. He was one of the more interesting characters in the game, so to see this is saddening. I really hope the show does him justice later on.

  • q4985urughnlst8yls86p30a58yhp says:

I do not tolerate this Yosuke guy, he basically forces the girls to get into skimpy outfits. Yeah, he gets pushed into the river, but that’s like rape! Is this supposed to be normal teenage male behavior in a country as sexist as Japan? If he did that in USA he’d be arrested or at the very least expelled! I’ve never seen any boy in anime behave like that! None of the other teenage boys in Persona 4 act like this! The side characters like Kou are more likable than Yosuke!

  • q4985urughnlst8yls86p30a58yhp says:

If the girls are such bad cooks, then why didn’t Yu do it instead? Did the boys just expect the girls to do all the cooking and serve them? Cause that really rubs me the wrong way! I though the group was supposed to make dinner! Is this the 1950s?

    @q4985urughnlst8yls86p30a58yhp

I was with you on the Kanji thing, but now you seem like you’re just adding multiple, petty posts. The exclamation points don’t help either.

And are you sure you’ve played the game?

Or did I just get trolled?

  • importantnobody says:

Come on, Kanji isnt that important of a character even in the game. He just hang out with Yu and the others because no one else wants to be around him. Even in the game he is treated as an idiot character so I dont see way the big deal.
However, I kinda do agree that Yosuke is a little more arrogant and annoying then he is on the game.

Does anyone else think he’s starting to look like a cartoonified Batou from GitS?

  • amyable says:

The show’s fallen off a LOT in the last two episodes. It doesn’t feel that they’re working towards an end so much as throwing up random scenes and in-jokes from the game. I’m still hopeful, however.

They dropped the ball a bit with regard to Kanji, but the attention he received from reviewers/gamers for his sexuality was always disproportionate to the size of his in-game role. It’s not an excuse, but I never expected them to do much with the guy.

Oh yeah, and thanks for blogging during Turkey Day. Happy eating to all.

  • meh says:

I like Kanji, so it does hurt to have him being ragged on by everyone. Yosuke, I can understand since he was like that in the game, but I’m sad that they are making Yu dog on him too. Also, I felt that Kanji’s dilemma was much more serious than Yukiko’s, yet Kanji gets shafted while they try to make Yukiko a bigger character than she actually was(plus is it me or are they trying to make her the canon girl, I don’t mind, it just seems that way).

  • Keith Kurogane says:

    What the hell?
Is Kanji the Butt Monkey of this show?
    Hell no.

  • The Phantom says:

This episode had me laughing my ass off for nearly half of it, Kanji was an annoying character in the game anyway, at least he is good for a few jokes here, some of them were even in the game so whats the matter?

As a side note, it seems that Yukiko is wining, I’d prefer Chie over her anytime… anyway Rise is my favorite so I’m rooting for her, Go GO Rise-Chan :D

  • Albedo says:

Here’s hoping this show doesn’t become a complete joke soon.

  • jingoi says:

I want to see Kanji’s character development so I hope they change how he is handled.
I’m on Hanamura’s side. Why does Chie act like he’s the most digusting man alive? Is he really perverted in the games or is Chie just being a f**king tsundere? And Yukiko thinking the same as Chie makes her less interesting as well.

  • blasterbun says:

The tent scene with Kanji being kicked out was very hurtful, not funny at all. Could you imagine if that happened to you or your friend?

  • ark noir says:

I like the useless 5 second bit at the end of the credits plus I like how Yuu gets a free power up every episode and hasn’t had his soul on display like the others. He is the wild card…….whatver that means?I miss persona 1 & 2.

  • blasterbun says:

This ain’t mine, but I found some guy’s opinion on a forum, it’s a good read:

*Edit* Do not post 30 bloody paragraphs twice. Link instead if you really feel the urge to share it.
