Persona 4 #06 — The Wooing of Nanako

November 10th, 2011

Is it just me, or does Naoto seem incredibly short?

Impressions:

Actually, I think what concerns me more is the Doujima household’s spatial-warping cordless phone. Nanako can fit her fist mostly around it, but Yuu can barely hold the monstrous thing. Maybe Nanako just has hands like a grizzly. Not a particularly eventful episode otherwise, just beginning of setup to get to Kanji’s dungeon with the first of the many friend-time events with Nanako for the first half. And steak. Or at least what passes for steak at a Japanese convenience store. Barbarians.

I kind of wish they’d reserve some of this character building between Yuu and the rest of the party (if you can even call it that) for the dungeons where there’d be a little more oomph to it, source be damned. The chase scene was kind of hilariously badly animated for this show too, although it was kind of amusingly silly. Whatever complaints about the art and style there may be, they have continued to mostly do a very good job with actually animating the characters, having them gesture, react during conversations, lean towards the person talking, etc. All the things that keep conversation from just being parades of talking heads. That scene though… speedlines and ugliness in what has otherwise been quite well animated.

Back into the TV and on to manly men next week.

4 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

Oh God the Dreaded dungeon of manly man next week.

  • Anelace says:

Naoto is only 152 cm (which is barely 5 ft), and Kanji is huge at 183, a foot taller than her, so…

I raised my eyebrows at the chase scene too, but since it was for comedic effect, I just let it slide.

I’ll be honest. I was laughing like mad at the skit with the delivery. Even if it was just speedlines, that was the best two minutes of comedy in this season so far.

Does anyone notice how well-aniamted the midnight scene is with Kanji at the end? That was in the trailer about a year before. The one who animated that scene most likely complained about not being paid and left the company, because the scenes with Shadow Kanji in the next episode were so badly animated and choppy.
