Flashbacking Penguindrum #14 — The Hot Spring Episode
October 13th, 2011
Every show must have one.
Impressions:
Well, it was better than most recent episodes thanks to a few things actually happening and happening for greater than the final 30 seconds of the episode, but being better than the last month or so isn’t exactly a difficult feat. Was it a surprise that the last character in the show that was confirmed as not having Ringo’s diary does in fact have it? No. Does it make any sense that she’s also obsessed with Momoka and now suddenly has the overwhelming urge to drug Ringo and do things to her because they’re sort of similar? No. Is any time actually spent looking for the penguindrum that is supposedly the central plot to this show? Not really. But hey, lesbians and T&A. That’s two things that are are already an improvement over recycled footage of the flashback sign and Ringo’s godawful daydreams.
Still though, while it was better spaced than usual, everything of interest was in the second half. The first half was dildos, if not worse, thanks in large part to Shouma doing his damnedest to restore the status quo between him and Ringo for no particular reason, but mostly just nothing important going on but primping and preening as usual. They also apparently blew the budget on Masako taking down Kanba Kamba’s contacts, which wasn’t even particularly impressive to begin with, because almost every piece of dialogue for the entire rest of the episode comes the back of people’s heads. At least when they can be bothered to even do that. Slow pans over other character listening without moving were about as common.
But hey, rapist lesbians. I’ll take those over endless torrents of flashbacks any day of the week.
