Carnival Phantasm #05-06 — The Strongest Noble Phantasm

Poor Lancer.

Impressions:

Episode 5 was just flat out awesome. Berserker, lovable tramp that he is, wanders the city looking for batteries for Ilya’s XBox controller and defeats every other servant along the way, occasionally by using other servants as his weapon. The segment itself reminded me a lot of Potemayo of all things, with the silly narration depicting Berserker as an innocent, lovable little scamp who just happens to leave destruction everywhere in his wake. I’m also really liking these random dining-together sequences between characters that the show did both episodes too. Nero’s animals popping out of him to eat his food was great. Also surprisingly adorable at times. Not something you’d expect to say about Nero. Archer and Seven bonding over their masters was also quite amusing.

Unfortunately, episode 6 was pretty bad. It tried to play off Sakura/Shinji’s relationship as an overblown soap opera with Rider up to shenanigans to stop Sakura from being beaten or raped, but… well… you can probably already see the issue. For one, it’s not overplayed enough to go from creepy/tragic to funny and second, it’s really not all that different from the game to begin with, just with Rider hitting Shinji with things. There were a couple moments, like her pulling out her stat sheet as an excuse or Caster having Rule Breaker attached to her wallet, but overall, episode six made me cringe at how awkwardly it was trying to play off Shinji beating and trying to rape Sakura as a joke.

Onward to the rest!

I think the joke was supposed to be along the “Isn’t it sad” part of Tsukihime.

Didn’t quite work here… was kind of awkward and creepy…

    what a bad show

Episode six really made my skin crawl. It wasn’t just the humor, but the fact of all the jokes they could have… Uh, how? Why? Last time I checked, Shinji was persona non grata in the fandoms – and although I’m not one to suggest catering to their needs, well, it would have been less offensive – and less terribly stupid – not to pass off the rapist as being part of a ‘wacky family dynamic’. Just not funny.

Ah, well. It’s been mostly a good ride so far.
