Copihan — A Post-Modern Masterpiece

August 11th, 2011

I will never get tired of making fun of Gonzo.

Impressions:

Normally, I could not care less about these 4 minute shorts, but since this is Gonzo’s grand return to actual animation as the first ‘show’ they’ve actually animated since they melted down in 2009, I figured it was worth a few minutes of my time to point and laugh at them. Let’s see what they’ve learned.

We’ve got a panty shot within the first minute, then a completely unrelated segment about guys looking at the lead’s panties, then she goes and plays baseball where she gets to wear her own special girly skintight uniform showing her perky breasts bounce wildly from the strenuous act of stepping up to the plate while ambiguously gendered twins give themselves seizures in excitement. What has Gonzo learned then? To use less CG in their pandering T&A drek. Hoo-ray. Now their financial success is assured! I have no idea why they even go out of their way to make it take place in the future either. Maybe that’s the year after Japanese Title IX takes effect.

5 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

Nice to see that Coo Erhard got a sex-change and his twin sister and him got a job after the death of DiGi Charat.

Damn you fanservice, I have too many sub/dub shows on my list, now I must wait for subs!

Ya know. I liked Last Exile and Gankutsuou (even if it’s hugely different from the Count I know and love), so I don’t get why Gonzo… Gonzo-es. There clearly wasn’t enough of a market for their brand of shameless pandering (is it pandering when no one wants it?) to sustain them the first time around, so why couldn’t they try – and here is a genuinely revolutionary thought – to make something good for round two..?

And on top of everything else, the guy in shot 24 looks a bit like Woody Allen.

    And I like Vandread.

Gonzo have issues beyond the T&A pandering and CGI use, one was how they ended many of their series, like Desert Punk with the sudden switch of lead and then the whole ending that is very different of the series tone was until then.

They are/were a very weird studio, a good example of that is Gravion that to this day I am not sure if its a parody or not, I dont recall people complaining about FMP! but then again R+V was a VERY loose adaptation of the manga.

Unfortunately it seems their return is not “Vandread” but rather, “R+V”.
