The Mystic Archives of Dantalian #03 — Quick… Do Nothing

July 29th, 2011

That was… less than exciting.

Impressions:

I’m not sure if I can bear this too much more. This episode was fairly atrocious, making it two episodes of a very steady and disturbingly rapid decline from the first, and it isn’t like the first episode didn’t have its fill of problems. Hugh and Dalian sat around drinking tea and eating candy between introducing a few different characters, Hugh’s childhood friend who should not be allowed to dress herself anymore, and the children of the corn. And some completely random uncouth scallywags take them captive and then run off to… get booked to death offscreen and then recapped in a flashback. The creepy kids were the more interesting of the ‘two,’ so of course they only got about 60 seconds.

So basically, it was twenty minutes of talking heads and everything vaguely interesting happened somewhere else. How compelling and exciting. The episode got particularly painful when the pair was tied up, held at gunpoint, and Dalian was petulantly whining about their captors eating her chocolate until one of them slaps Hugh in the head with his gun. Stellar. Just stellar. In a world of evil books with a giant plant-book-monster sitting around in the greenhouse, you give us a little girl crying about thieves stealing candy. Priorities, Gainax, priorities.

I really want to like this show, but it’s not working for me. I dig the Rozen Maiden/Gosick/Read Or Die mash-up, but reading such insanely long spells in lift threatening situations and then plopping down for a cup of tea two minutes later…eh.

Animation is nice and the creepy ending footage is interesting, but the rest of it reminds me of the U.S. debt ceiling argument.
