Spinning Penguindrum #02 — Elaborate Metaphors

July 14th, 2011

Very deep.

Impressions:

Well, this lost a lot of points with me for not managing to go 5 minutes before breaking out the stock animation sequence… with one of the brothers shouting in surprise that it was not a dream he had after all. I think I actually groaned. And then the rest of the episode was about the penguins running around trying to sniff the new girl’s panties. Somehow, this episode managed to crush Mayo Chiki in random T&A this week, and that’s without me even having to reach like usual for various sexual metaphors. A pair of penguins wearing panties and a bra on their heads can only be taken so far.

Unfortunately, that was about 90% of the episode, the brothers following a girl around at the behest of their crazy penguin queen. Yeah, the girl ended up being a stalker (of an Akira Ishida character? Why?) who thinks that some guy is her destiny since that’s the buzzword for the show, and with a diary covered in snakes (almost a caduceus on the cover actually, if you want to start over analyzing everything). That’s not creepy at all. But still, that reveal was literally in the last minute of the episode. The rest was wacky penguin antics and underwear jokes. I guess I’m glad that the philosophizing and melodrama was toned down a lot this week, but I wasn’t really hoping that it would be replaced by "Hahaha… panties." Hopefully next week will be a little more on target.

4 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • The Deviant says:

Am I the only one disappointed by this show? The Trailer made it seem mysterous or something.

    • Aex says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if it got more dramatic, but right it’s just trying too hard to be dumb.

    • Kaisos says:

Well, it IS mysterious. Nothing makes any damn sense yet and probably isn’t going to.

  • The Phantom says:

    The stalker was really creepy.
