"The guy I irrationally idolize has an identical twin? Who is angsty and tortured? And in my class? And it’s against the rules for me to be tagteamed by them? Oh cruel wanton fate! Why must you torture me so!" Okay, now the show has all of the usual man-harem cliches. Can’t have a man-harem without an angsty twin after all. How else is the female supposed to show her special connection besides being the only one able to determine which is which?

    I’ve always wondered: are story cliches cliche because they work and we want them, or are cliches taught?

      Both. Certain themes are fairly universal (see: Campbell’s monomyth), but cliche intrinsically means that it is so overused that it has lost its initial impact. Things that work get taught, then get abused by the lazy or untalented and become cliche.
