Carnivoran & Lagomorph #13 — “Revenge Boy Out For Revenge”
June 25th, 2011
His vengeance burns with the revenge of avenging.
Impressions:
As usual, this was a clusterblintz of bad writing. Also as usual, the choreography… or rather, lack thereof… didn’t help the action scenes either. You can only watch a guy wave his arm vaguely and then have a CG mannequin explode so many times. We passed that point awhile ago. The constant interruptions to go look at everything else going on didn’t help much either. And by going on, I mean talking about how they could or should be doing something. Still, at least it was a lot more action than almost any other episode, so that puts it in the upper echelon for this show. However, it still lacks any kind of dramatic tension to have things completely one-sided and just feels cheap when the hero ends up winning with some minor gimmick that lets them finally hit the baddie once. Seriously. They’ve spent almost the entire season building this guy up, had an entire episode devoted to showing how overpowering he is, and then he goes down to a flash bomb and kick to the ribs.
But on to the writing issues. First and worst on the writing issues was Kotetsu going from death’s door at the end of last week to minorly inconvenienced by his wounds, to all but fine with a limp. And even that disappeared when it was time to break out the bat-grapple. Somehow, his hundred power can also heal him. I can’t wait for it to also grant him heat beam eyes or something too. I often wonder if anime writers ever actually think what shows will seem like if/when people actually watch episodes back to back. Fighting the antagonist to nearly dead in the ICU to teleporting across the city in less time than it takes to boil an egg.
Second, and also pretty terrible, was Jake’s end. Again, the entire show and Barnaby’s whole character has been building up to this fight… and the only gravitas attached to the scene comes from him crying and apologizing to his dead parents. Plus, that little flash bomb seemed to destroy Jake’s entire brain because he then immediately gave up and sat quietly while the heroes talked until it was time to make his dramatic escape… at which point he successfully destroyed his own helicopter and dropped it on himself. Maybe he should have… I don’t know… used a barrier to block that? Or a barrier when being choked? I don’t even want to get started about his telepathy also somehow granting the super human ability to react to other people’s super human abilities either. That’s a terrible nonsensical cliche pervading far more shows than this anyway.
And thus Bunny’s quest for revenge comes to an end with a death that was probably cribbed from Disney’s G-Force 2: Operation Cavy Caper. I don’t think he even has a plotline anymore.
Just to cap it all off, next week involves a love story at what appears to be a dance studio with heroes slipping on banana peels. Now we’re getting places. Or maybe fleeing for one of the newly beginning shows.
Preview:
Nothing about this seems promising.

Aww. I like your Tiger & Bunny posts, but Saturday next season looks like it will have a lot of shows. Besides the crazy Thursdays. :|
