[C] #09 — Clowngasms
June 9th, 2011
Spoiler, Kimimaro is still useless and worthless.
Impressions:
God, the intro segment was so bad, and yet it was the best part. This will probably go down as my favorite Engrish exchange of the year.
"Y’all have heard of the Caribbean republic in the Caribbeans?"
"As a rumor, yes, I’ve heard of it… but no one’s actually seen or heard of it."
It’s like… zen, brotha.
And then we get back to an intrinsic problem with this show. It’s going off in random directions while Kimimaro stands around doing nothing. Hell, the entire first half was literally just watching things disappear, Mikuni convene with the Heart of the Money, which somehow hurt all Assets while stablizing things, and the clown having a clowngasm. And that was it. I’m as big a fan of cutting out talking in place of showing, they showed us absolutely nothing new. Just rehashed the cliffhanger from last week and stretched it out an extra 5 minutes.
Then we go to the second half, which featured Kimimaro moping around and Jennifer bringing up his father. In true hamhanded fashion, he just goes right to the information broker who happens to have a photo of daddy with an Asset that looks identical to MSYU. Five minute later, Kimimaro learns about Hanabi’s plot induced depression and proceeds to… go talk to MSYU who wants a kiss. So he rejects her and kisses her on the forehead. I’m torn between being annoyed at how clumsily they’re handling every single attempt at romance in this show with the girl who has had no screentime vs the girl who may or may not be a family member, and how they’re apparently using it to generate angst and a rift between MSYU and Kimimaro. Great. It feels like they’re just throwing every possible thing at the wall now to see what’ll stick. Romance, depression, daddy, monsters, technobabble, etc. Meanwhile, they’ve completely forgotten that Kimimaro has to actually do something… anything.

Why do I get the feeling the moral of this is going to somehow end up being ‘get a job and spend money?’
