Yada Yada Flower #01 — Trees: The Silent Killer

April 14th, 2011

What is it with Japan and killing girls from trees?

Impressions:

I’m not really sure how to come at this show. There’s so much melodrama, and to its credit, it does outright reveal that the girl’s dead by the end of the episode, but getting there… well… let’s review the clues and see if you can solve this before GOSICK would. Nobody can see, hear, or touch her except Jinta, Jinta calls her the source of his trauma, Jinta has flashbacks and goes catatonic whenever she trips or falls… especially when it comes to trees. It’s not exactly much of a mystery, although in GOSICK’s case, I imagine that the conclusion would be that she choked to death trying to eat her shoe. That just leaves a bunch of angsty teenagers that an emotionally stunted ghost girl is trying to make get along with each other again. Oh, and the episode ends with two of them running into each other and discovering that the least angsty of the lot (so far) is using their old hideout to stash his porn… and assumably do other things.

Like all A-1 first episodes, the show’s production looks fine and the music is quite good, especially the ED theme. The characters though… eh. They’re so transparently trying to pull at the heartstrings that it doesn’t work. It’s just melodrama for melodrama’s sake without actually building up any of these characters first. Cross Game, or even Shigofumi, did a much better job introducing its characters before killing one off. This basically started by saying that a character was dead and expecting the audience to care. So I guess the draw is supposed to be a bunch of angsty teens overcoming Menma’s death and becoming friends again… except that they’re all jerks, or chronic masturbators. I’m not sure why were’s supposed to care about any of them.

Regardless of all else, melodrama and I don’t along so I doubt I’ll be giving this a second look. I’m not sure whether I like that they got the reveal that Menma was dead out of the way so quickly, or am annoyed that they dropped so many clues about it before the reveal that even a nearsighted bat could have seen the light. As usual, writing is not exactly A-1’s strong point and I highly doubt it will improve enough to turn the angst into something emotionally touching instead of blatant puppeteering.

And one last quote:

<Moogy> man, it would be great if it were all a big practical joke they were playing on him the entire time

I wish.

  • Phocus says:

The art style looks exactly like the Highschool of the Dead anime. Not that it’s wrong or anything, but I keep expecting zombies to show up.

  • EXM says:

Well, at least I agree with you that the music and ed is probably one of the show’s high point. Seeing as you hate angst and drama, it’s understandable why you’d consider it contrived. Then again, most people who watch drama watch it knowingly it’s contrived, so it’s a matter of opinion.

  • Annonymous says:

Actually most people managed to guess that she’s already dead just from the summary.

    • Aroduc says:

The problem is that they’re pretending like they’re being coy about it and just padding it out for almost the entire episode by showing that yes indeed, the fifth, sixth, seventh, eigth, etc people can’t see her either. If they wanted the reveal to be shocking, they needed to not drop hints the size of chevies. If they wanted to just get it out there as a framing device, they should have started with the oh-so-traumatic flashbacks. Of course, there are also people out there who think it’ll ruin the 90 seconds of ‘build-up’ to know that.
I don’t have a great deal of respect for those people.

    • Rincewind says:

So, she met Kenshiro or what? =P

  • We all know the real twist in the end is that she ISN’T dead yet and that she’s actually in some hospital ICU, stuck in a coma until Jintan fulfills his childhood promise to love her forever more so that she can finally wake up.

    • EXM says:

Dead people don’t eat says her brother. Her family confirms this, and Jinta quite explicitly says the day he’d see her again would never come. So that wouldn’t be a twist, but an ass pull.

And the real twist is that it’s all Jinta’s nightmare. Jinta was the one who actually fell off the tree, etc. etc. Doubt they’re going to go with this twist though.

      • Aroduc says:

        I prefer Moogy’s twist.

      • Godslayer says:

I’d like something along the line sharin no kuni’s revelation. That everyone just put Meiko in Ririko’s role without notifying all this to Jinta.

    • Anonymous says:

@ Kurogane: So… something like Hiyori from Mizuiro?

  • rufe says:

ikirei? This looks to be touching in the way that Japanese people love (Is it’s programmed in? I cried watching some stupid movie on a flight that followed one of these formulae).

It looks clear that she’s died considering the offerings at the alter. That scene (the brother’s attitude) was weird to me, normally people have memorial services on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th……….50th year. It wouldn’t be unusual to make offerings during that time at all.

    • EXM says:

Might want to watch the subs. It’s stated his mother gives her offerings every time they have curry, which gets on his nerves.

  • Yue says:

Come on guys, shed some manly tears… you know you want to. ^_^

  • Nanaya says:

Something I never understand with these ghost series is why the only guy who can see/hear the ghost doesn’t have them do poltergeist stuff to convice related people about it. Would make a lot of situations a lot less awkward.
