Taiga and Bomby #03 — Men Fiddling With Things
April 16th, 2011
I would have just given this the short clip treatment… except there was nothing even worth that.
Impressions:
Bleh. This episode just kept piling on the bad cliches without end. I guess the most amusing thing is Kotetsu’s stellar disguise. Who could that masked man be? Even 1940s Dick Grayson would be too embarrassed to try to call that a disguise. The rest… again… bleh. Buddy argument over which way to move out of cover, Barny’s basically Bruce Wayne, shifty ‘repairman’ and then (shock!) a museum bombing, fiddling with the damn thing for five minutes before just kicking it out, etc and yawn. I can’t even stretch almost any of that into a homoerotic joke… and that’s after I found a way to cram in the Boy Wonder!
The show needs to be a lot more incisive if it wants to carry itself as an actual parody of super heroes or a satire of commercialism. It’s just drowning in more and more cliches right now without an end in sight. As it is, it doesn’t even cut as deeply at the super hero genre as the Tick did. It needs to overplay the cliches, not treat them like serious and interesting developments. Or introduce an actual supervillain instead of Kotetsu’s guilt about not being there for his family. What kind of superhero show goes three episodes without a single damn supervillain?
Preview:
Apparently a fanservice episode!

I think you’re missing the point. This is not supposed to be a parody of superheroes or a satire of commercialization, this is a buddy cup show except with superheroes instead of cops.
