Blue Grocer #01 — What Exorcist?
April 17th, 2011
Wasn’t this show supposed to be about killing demons?
Nghph. Yeah, yeah. I’m awake now. I can watch the undoubtedly terrible A-1 show.
Impressions:
Yeesh. Could this have moved any slower? Or have been more generic? In fact, I think the way that this sets itself apart from other shows of its kind is by moving at an absolute snail’s pace. Heck, it takes almost the entire episode to even get to the generic bullies-turned-demon part. Many shows of this ilk begin there. Instead of demons, action, or anything interesting, after the first few seconds of priests spontaneously combusting, it’s almost 20 minutes of Rin struggling with ties and comically failing at simple menial labor because he’s socially awwwwwwkward. But it’s okay, because he’s been born super special, everybody’s world revolves around him, and he wins everybody over after a couple minutes anyway. The only way I think he could be more of a Mary Sue is if he had a cheerleader inexplicably in love with him. Maybe that’s coming next week.
A-1 at least usually makes good beginning episodes before collapsing under the pressure of having to make another eleven episodes since they’ve all but become the new Gonzo minus the abuse of CG, but this was just a snoozefest. It wasn’t even particularly well animated. It was certainly above average, but there was just nothing going on whatsoever and no interesting direction at all. It does have a fairly strong soundtrack, but that’s hardly going to carry it once A-1’s A-1ness really kicks in full tilt.
So yeah. Nothing really to see here but another fairly average ‘action’ show so far… which has forgotten to contain any action as of yet. Maybe it’ll get better in the next episode when something actually happens, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. A-1 hasn’t exactly done much to instill faith in them in recent years, and starting off with a weak episode is even worse than usual for them.
Preview:
I like how the most animated thing in the preview was a shot of feet running on a CG platform.
