Supernatural #01 — Stop This, Madhouse

February 24th, 2011

Please. For the sake of all that’s holy, stop.

Why can’t all this stuff come out on Tuesdays or Sundays? Eesh.

Impressions:

I really don’t know what’s with this flood of western adaptations that Madhouse is making, but it needs to stop. Granted, I don’t watch Supernatural to begin with (but probably should), so I’m less familiar with this than with all the Marvel crap they’ve been… crapping out. It does seem like they’re improving slightly with each iteration though. Perhaps by the fifteenth one, they’ll have worked their way up to average. I’m not even really certain who this is supposed to be for to begin with. It’s apparently an adaptation of an episode from partway through the first season (titled Skin), but condensed to 20 minutes instead of 40. So if you’re already a fan, enjoy watching an abridged, barely animated episode you’ve already seen, and if you’re not, enjoy a complete lack of introduction to characters, the plot, or… well… anything.

The problem really does boil down to the same as Iron Man and Wolverine though, this is simply soulless, devoid of any creativity or hooks that make it stand out, unless you count Dean’s creepy blank eyed stare as he tries to hit on women. What’s the point of using a more freeform visual environment like animation if all you’re going to do with it is overanimate some generic alien body switching? Use the medium! Create atmosphere! It feels like they’re not even trying to create tension and by revealing the shapeshifter in new forms within about 30 seconds of every single appearance the writing also fails to accomplish that. Exacerbate things with some ridiculous scenes, like the shapeshifter doing some kind of giant spin when he first attacks the two or Sam running into the middle of a highway (nobody stops or swerves to avoid him of course) to shoot into a car going 60 mph and it’s not even being consistent about how it’s presenting itself. However, I do think my favorite scene of absolutely horrendous writing was when Sam deduced that it wasn’t really Dean who had tied him up and was now taunting him by the fact that his shoulder wasn’t injured anymore, followed by the writers immediately forgetting all about that and have Dean swing around on a rope willy nilly. Great work, team.

At least they ended with Carry On Wayward Son, which like most Kansas, is 15 times more hilarious while people are speaking Japanese over it.
