Kara no Kyoukai Epilogue — Nice… Background?

February 2nd, 2011

Maybe they spent all their effort on the next Symphonia OVA… right? …Right?

Impressions:

Well, this was a bit disappointing. I was hoping for something a little more than what was basically an audio book of Shiki and Kokuto talking for half an hour. One of Kara no Kyoukai’s best points was how amazing it looked, but that’s ruined when they spend upwards of two or three minutes on every shot and half of them are just designed to look out on the background. It’s a very nice background, but still not something I want to spend 30 minutes staring at. That just leaves the snow. The endless endless snow.

As for the actual content… eh. I guess it’s an okay tagline to a series that didn’t need one. Most of it is just a review of Shiki’s background and her origins, so it doesn’t really cover any new ground either. Same with Shiki’s relationship with Kokuto. It really does feel like something they took off an audio CD, spent an afternoon drawing a couple nice backgrounds for, and then decided to toss onto a DVD for a few extra bucks. I expect better from you, UFO Table, especially with the blu-rays apparently being little more than the DVDs upscaled. At least make it look like you’re trying, dammit.

    This is a pixar movie??

  • Joule says:

Aroduc are there any comparisons between the dvd and bluray I can look at?

  • Nanaya says:

I wonder what it would be like to live in akasha-personality shiki’s perspective. Would be amazing, but also probably really lonely.

  • Twi says:

    …no mana?

  • Anonymous says:

    No Mana, sadly.

Thank you for saving me 30 minutes Aroduc. I have no interest in Shiki’s and Kokutou’s already overdone relationship that has progressed from talking with each other to holding hands.

    • Nanaya says:

It’s actually pretty interesting, if you like tying up plot threads and side-detail implications. It’s a conversation that happened between Kokuto and Shiki’s only-hinted-at third, “base” personality that he initially met in the second movie, who is basically God.

If I recall from the novels, she pops in to say hi and offers to overwrite his eye injury. A lot of the series makes a lot more sense with this, although only the fanatical cult following will really enjoy it.

  • Wilfriback says:

Thanks for saving me from spending in a worthless OVA(?) Aroduc.
I always had the feeling that a man version of Shiki would have been more romantic with Kokuto, yeah, their relationship is so-so that a yaoi could do it better.
