Is This a Zombie? #05 — The Soothing Warmth of Plutonium

February 7th, 2011

No wonder Japan has a low birth rate.

Impressions:

I feel a little annoyed by this episode. The action in the second half was nice and all, but the first half clearly showed where the budget for it came from and it was just piling on unanswered questions for really no good reason. It’s like they’re literally just making stuff up for Kyoko on the spot and will worry about explaining all of it later. Don’t get me wrong, it was vastly better than the first half which was spent almost entirely listening to Ayumu doing tongue twisters on the phone with Haruna’s boss and looking at stills of the girls glowing like Chernobyl, but there comes a point where you need to take a riding crop to the writers and say that’s enough.

She is the killer after all, and another magical (item) girl who knows Haruna (but the latter doesn’t know her), has some kind of vampire power that’s not vampire power, hasn’t fully revealed her reason for going on a wanton slaughter yet, and has a mutant healing factor that just won’t quit, bub. I’m more impressed that her clothes also managed to heal, but clothing in Japanese anime has never made a lick of sense. Oh yeah, and she was a mangled corpse at the end of last week’s episode. They’re going to have to sit down and explain this at some point, and I doubt they’re going to toss up another radioactive girl bath scene to do it.

  • Still, everything went better than expected!

    K-ON had more plot

  • sage says:

    Superb episode.

Kyouko’s BOIN is almost BOYOYON level. Almost. It made Sage Jr. really happy down there.

    Also…

[ Mastersage ] Also, what has masou shoujo/megalo/vampire/soul-robbing/regeneration powers?
[ Mastersage ] The answer is easy.
[ Mastersage ] Someone that can absorb powers of others. Or assimilate them from their souls.
    [ Mastersage ] Or whatever.
[ Mastersage ] The answer is along those lines.

Oh. And delusion Eu made me tear up IRL this time.

    • Nanaya says:

I think that’s on to something, although even though it’s a cheap power I still doubt their writing skills are good enough to do that. It’s probably more of a ‘LETS MAKE HER AS POWERFUL AS EVERYONE ELSE COMBINED’ thing taken too literally.

Now watch while they all have to team up and use the power of freaking friendship to beat her and give the viewers an outbreak of diabetes.

    • Aex says:

Personally I figure Kyouko started out as a Masou Shoujo since she seems to know Haruna but Haruna’s horrible with remembering people so no surprise she doesn’t remember Kyouko. Then she stumbled onto some crazy “kill someone and gain their life-energy and powers” spell, then she shanked 11 creatures and got knock-off versions of their powers. One was probably a Vampire and she probably got a few Megalos, so that would account for all her powers plus her saying she can still die 10 times.

Yeah, I think about this stuff way too much.

  • Okita says:

Hey least there was some action better than nothing =/

  • Aex says:

Okay… why was Ayumu so desperate to open Haruna’s door? That part was really random and made NO sense at all. Otherwise, not bad. Kyoko is evil (no surprise), and she’s got boss-level powers. Looking forward to Eu kicking her ass.

Sidenote: I’m starting to think that Sera’s nickname for Ayumu is gonna turn out to be some twisted formality when talking to men that comes from her village. Really hoping she isn’t that stupidly “tsun”. Guess I’m looking for a reason to like her >.<

    • Amyable says:

Yeah, I’m in the same boat. The show remains awesome and hilarious, but Sera gave me the worst first impression imaginable and hasn’t improved much since then. Her seiyuu and boobage are of the highest order, and yet her character is a net negative overall, which is quite telling.

  • Mesousa says:

    Random yuri in the beginning…?

  • Tylon says:

Wait a minute, I was still thinking where did I see the 305 room tag.
Sigh… Is Kyoko the old hag in this scene:

    Sigh… Please don’t ruin her image. I hope I’m wrong…

  • Anise_Punter says:

The second half of the episode made up for the first half – almost. Still not going to get back that eight minutes of stills of stuff I didn’t need to see in the first place.

  • Jack says:

Why don’t cats ever wear pants?

  • Nazarielle says:

This seems to be a season of guys getting it from behind from girls…

  • Mythical Gloss says:

No Im pretty sure she’s just a mimic, damn it I hate Mimics.

  • Jack says:

Hmm…So, are the Masou Shoujo evil then? or just this chick? Besides the verbally abusive vampire, is everyone else faking their pleasant demeanor? Is everyone really an evil piece of crap?

    Hmm…

    • Aex says:

Every organization has a few bits of evil to it. Haruna might be insane, but I really doubt she’s evil, so I’d go with 50/50 odds.
