Invasion! Squid Girl #11 — Johnny Depp
December 13th, 2010
Really, Diomedea? Really?
Impressions:
What an absolutely dull and tedious episode. The second part should get some kind of award for stretching out an incidental joke to an entire unthrilling minute or so. Chizuru cuts a fly in half as Cyndi’s talking about how she’s beyond human at the start. Okay, fine. So the scientists then decide to observe her/steal DNA with a robot fly. And the punchline is that she destroys the robot fly when it gets close to her. That’s it. It also exemplifies why I’m really disappointed in this show. Humor needs unpredictibility to work and this show has none of it. Jokes are done far far too slowly and the punchlines telegraphed often minutes before delivery with rarely any twist on the formula. Once the setup is established, the punchline is obvious, but it’ll take the show a good 30 seconds to a minute (or even more sometimes) to actually get there.
Anyway, the first sequence was Squid’s encounter with a "Johnny" doll, part of a "Johnny and Depp" (seriously?) set which turn to face each other and talk to each other. Only this one lacks Depp, so just sort of moves and talks randomly. The second part was the scientist gang trying to get a sample of Chizuru’s DNA. Notice how the first thing that they did with a stealth suit was grab each other’s asses. The final part was the family going on a hike and Squid getting attacked by various animals and arguing with her echo.
