C79: Scarlet Symphony II Impressions

Yes, yes. It has a better VA cast than most shows. Let’s move on from that.
Given that the trials were relatively extensive and a lot of the work is recycled from the first game, there’s not a ton surprising here. Sakuya’s much lighter on her feet than Reimu was in 1, which does help some of the control issues, but the somewhat touchy controls can still make things frustrating. Sakuya’s knives are also a little janky at times since their hitboxes extend horizontally and upwards more than their sprite indicates, but not below, which is particularly fun on the levels full of things eager to eat your shins. Or more likely, they’re after Sakuya’s garter. Level design is definitely improved, but one only has to look at the inane bookcases in Patchy’s stage to wonder if Frontier Aja was high when they put this stuff together. Some design decisions also seem not quite realized too, like Sakuya’s backdash, which will send you soaring down five flights of stairs if used near them. Or her knives out of her backdash which are basically useless and impossible to hit anything with.
Still a good solid game though. A little bit on the easy side since you can give yourself 20 lives and begin from any stage once you reach it, but a nice sequel to the first game. That’s the biggest problem with it too though. It’s very much a sequel and other than the voices, there’s not really much different here. Insert your own jokes about Castlevania being rehashed forty times if you want, but I still would have liked to see a little a lot more variety out of it than just a new MC, new bosses, and a few new subweapons.

Trial version didnt work in my PC, it is surprising that a 2D doujin side-scroller requires potent hardware to run
