Invasion! Squid Girl #05 — Body Language

It’s not what you say, it’s the way you move.
Impressions:
Diomedea really did an excellent job with the third part of this and I wish they could do the same with the entire show. This kind of nonverbal communication and emotion is what so many anime lack these days, relying instead on overacting and yelling in place of being actually visually emotive. It was little more than just Eiko playing with what was basically a pet, but it had more emotion and cuteness in that little 6 minute segment than the show has managed to muster to date. Directing 101. Show, don’t tell, and if the music through that bit had been a little less repetitive and annoying, Diomedea would have knocked it out of the park.
The other two parts weren’t terrible either, particularly compared to some of what this show’s spewed out before. Part 1 was the brief intro to Cyndi Campbell, alien hunter, who then brainwashed SquidHead into thinking that she’s an alien and doing alien things for a brief time before food lured her back to ‘normalcy.’ Part 2 was SquidForBrains following them to school, assuming it was a military facility, and then taking it over. There are a lot more (and a lot better) jokes that they could have done than a montage of naming facilities and the like. I think its strict adherence to its 3 segments per episode really hurt it there. It should have been a full scale attack on the school, not just a montage and back to the same tired shrimp jokes as always.
