A Certain Magical Index II #07 — Bringing a Lamp to a Gunfight

November 19th, 2010

And yet, the spoon trumps a gun somehow.

Impressions:

Much better than last week. Really ridiculous at times, the first half was about 33% montaged of Misaka(s) running around with barely related voice over, and I think JCStaff’s artists spontaneously forgot how to draw Kuroko at times, but enough action to balance things out a little bit. They certainly could have handled most of the plot and Awaki better. I did ‘appreciate’ the reveal at the start of Awaki’s weakness after the fact. Wouldn’t that have been better placed… I don’t know… beforehand? And like every one of the science side arcs, it’s about more power(s), which is totally different from the last time when it was about more power or the time before that when it was about more power. I did get a laugh out of how the first thing that they focused on when Awaki started giving her generic "now I’ve got you trapped, time to reveal all the details of my evil plan" speech was a painting of a windmill. Superhuman powers! WINDMILLS!

The silliness of the episode made it pretty fun though. Kuroko grabs a lamp? Awaki pulls a pistol. That I think was the highlight of the episode for me from the sheer ridiculousness of it. I’m not even sure it was a real gun since Kuroko leaped bolt upright as soon as the building was attacked by the glare filter. The rest of it wasn’t bad either. Building blowing up in a psychic storm? Here comes Touma leaping from floating chair to floating chair to save the day by punching air. Bad guy getting away? Nah. Here’s Accelerator on his magical tornado wings to rant crazily then punch everything before returning to his day job as a bed chameleon. They did a decent job with all three little action scenes, but it’s a shame that each of them lasted maybe 30 seconds tops. I guess they needed extra time to animate the entire sequence of Misaka getting dressed. Way to keep your priorities straight, JCStaff.

And just FYI, Forte’s going to be a little delayed today. I have a meeting for a project worth a third of my grade in one class that kind of conflicts with Chaos’s insane ramblings.

  • Wilfriback says:

They weren’t floating by magic at least, somethingkoto was using her electrosomething to made them float.

The part I enjoyed the most was with Awaki saying: “Hahaha! You aren’t the strongest anymore! HAHAHA!” and then the reply she got: “Ah, but if became weaker this doesn’t made you stronger, right?” SPLAT!

Next week preview: blond girl, nnnghhhh!!

  • longhaul says:

    Accelerator punch, dayuuuuuuuuum.

  • Nanaya says:

I’m looking forward to the next arc, I can’t even think of any words to describe the solution to that situation. It made their whole ordeal so pointless, I couldnt stop laughing/headdesking.

  • Shinji103 says:

Lol, Accelerator was such a physical wimp back in the SISTERS Arc that they gave him Falcon Punch strength to even it out. ^^b

  • FlameStrike says:

Haha, he’s even more of a physical wimp with his brain damaged. But having control of all vectors more than makes up for it. It won’t help him against Touma’s hax though.

  • The Phantom says:

Enough blood and violence to satisfy me for a while, accelerator should have killed her tough, but the punch on her face was good enough. Index as usual was just annoying but the rest was ok.

  • Ransom says:

I could watch this episode again and again without getting bored :) It was a great conclusion, although yeah… Kuroko sacrifice in the end was for naught

  • Zilla says:

Man, Accelerator really is one of the best characters on this show. While everyone else is freaking out, he just shows up, says “Bitch, what the fuck is wrong with you?”, grows tornado wings and punches Awaki in the face. And he even manages to pull off the Falcon Punch without preaching a sermon, unlike others. Classic.

  • Rewriter says:

I felt sorry for Awaki after Accelerator punched the lights out of her.

    • The Phantom says:

The accelerator, the very one that murdered 10000+ misaka clones, now protecting last order another clone, is very ironic, nevertheless he’s still a badass and should come at the end of each arc to either punish the villain or/(and) kill him/her.

  • Avisch says:

So how many episodes do we need to wait till Accelerator appears again and makes the show good?

And Aroduc….Look at that Windmill man….it’s so deep….It is a true representation of the human spirit, it goes back to Don Quixote….yeah Awaki is Don Quixote, there we go.

This actually confused me because she was blabbing about psychic powered killer robots or whatever and then they showed a picture of windmills. I assumed the windmills were the evil super powered machines, and I thought the big twist was going to be the city was secretly covered in robot overlords just waiting to be powered up.

Sadly that was not the case.

  • Skiiage says:

You know, I think if they didn’t draw Accelerator spontaneously sprouting four tornadoes from his back, the whole scene would have looked slightly better and they might actually have had a bit more budget to do other stuff.

  • Yden says:

This is why I love Index. It shows all of life’s problems can be solved by finding the right person/object/air space and punching it really hard.

  • Solaris says:

The arc wasn’t about ‘more power’, but rather about what’s powers and where do they come from. Moreover is it really a gift only for humans or could an advanced AI even develop powers? You’d just take the incredible accurate predictions of the Three Diagrams as a kind of precog system.
So they fought over the remnants to gain some proof from the ultimate AI avaible.

It’s nice how ppl always get it sooo wrong about index.

    • Longhaul says:

Well actually, what people dont seem to connect is that and the fact that Awaki had convinced herself that it wasnt her doing bad things, it was her powers that were evil.

If other things could be given powers then people wouldnt have to be straddled with that evil. Kuroko of course ‘shatters her illusion’ once Awaki nearly kills her without using her powers.

      • Solaris says:

Oh, you’re so right! It’s a blessing to find here someone who can still do argument things like you. Thank you.
