A Certain Magical Index II #05 — Shoryuken!

Wait. Weren’t Touma and Orsola on a roof?

Edit: Sorry about the slightly smaller thumbnails. First post on my new laptop and I misremembered the thumbnail size.

Impressions:

A pretty disappointing end to this arc thanks to about 75% of the episode being people standing around talking. What even happened to the other nuns that got special names and weapons? They just… disappeared. Crazy earless nuns claw their way through most of the door in a matter of seconds… which gives the team almost five whole minutes to stand around and talk about the situation, none of them moving any part of their body at all except their lips. Exciting. Then we get almost ten full minutes of wrapup with Kaori and the Archibreasts. They’re slightly more animated, but Tsuchimikado wandering in and teasing them was more engaging than the remaining 9 or so minutes of nonsense.

The remaining 25% was okay, but it was mostly Red tapping her staff against things or scraping it with a knife while Touma bounced around like an abused sock puppet. I laughed when Touma’s first punch induced a flashback, but at least it was short. Watching Kugyu beat up Touma was decent enough, but the whole thing was resolved entirely too quickly and Touma in effect punching a little girl when she was helplessly staring down a giant fire golem was not exactly a blow in his favor. He never even really overcame her teleporty magic either, just dodged a single attack which so shocked everybody that they decided it was time to give up. Heck, he didn’t even try to block any of it with his Imagine Breaker despite it clearly being directional. I’m starting to think that all these women aren’t attracted to him at all, they just can’t escape his gravitational pull from being the densest thing in Academy City.

Preview:

On to a completely different and far more irritating group.

Then is true the hero the macho, rescue the girl, save the day and
the other girls are only fanservice.

  • Wilfriback says:

“In to a completely different and far more irritating group.”

Don’t worry Failharu will be inexistent and other will be just doing pseudo-cameos.

“The other girls are only fanservice.”
True indeed just wait for the girls from the next episode.

  • Dante says:

    Teleport magic?
That wand looked more like some kind of voodoo effect.

  • Zilla says:

If that’s Last Order, then Accelerator’s probably nearby, meaning at least we’ll get a few good episodes with quite possible the only good character in this show.

  • TJ says:

The first five minutes were pretty slow, but the rest was actually decent compared to the rest of the episodes in this arc. At least it was unintentionally funny at parts.

  • The Phantom says:

Touma punching the loli was one of the most amazing moments in the history of anime, nice way to beat that annoying bitch.

    WHAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOO!. xD

    • Nanaya says:

One thing I really like about this series is how every fight with Touma, no matter how high the power levels go, eventually turns into a fistfight with him punching the crap out of something or other.

  • Aex says:

Kanzaki is already illegally hott, but make her blush and fidget and she’s just… over 9000. That’s all there is to it. She needs to be around more, especially if Touma is around to make her fidget all love-struck.

I can’t get any kind of read on that blond with the umbrella. Even though she seems happy with how things turned out, I’m thinking she’s more on the evil side with her “plans”.

    • Myssa Rei says:

Well, Laura, Crowley, and (later) Fiamma are shown to be making literally EVERYONE dance to their plans. It’s like cloning Gendou Ikari three times, in effect.

      • Albedo says:

As long as a giant robot powered by Touma’s mother’s soul doesn’t chomp their heads off I’m ok with this.

  • longhaul says:

The episode was great once it got a few minutes in.

  • Solaris says:

I don’t know you’re still whining about exposition in Index. Everybody, his dog and his dog’s fleas too know already how Index is enough machinated and complex that’s impossible to resolve everything with action scenes. (be sure they cut an awful lot of exposition compared to the novels too). There has to be some kind of explanation to clarify the plot as this arc was entirely about political plots between magic factions and about tactics to defeat an army of warrior magical nuns. Sure something more brainless with more action would have been more fun to watch, so why are you blogging Index unless you found it interesting?

    • Kaisos says:

You should know by now that Aroduc doesn’t have the patience to watch anime unless something is exploding, somewhere, all the time.

      • Hyosuke says:

        Haha~, so true~. ^^

      • Aroduc says:

Pfft. If I wanted to watch shows about talking, I’d tune in to Jump.

      • Solaris says:

No need to go that far: Just watch Bakemonogatari, at least, besides a talk 18 min long fixed on a screen of a cellphone, you have nice girls to watch… I mean 78k DVD sold, people liked talking heads when they’re nice ¬_¬
        That beats Index anywhere…

      • Kaisos says:

I always love it when he drops what ends up being the best show of the season and watches ridiculous crap like Juuden-chan instead.

That’s not exactly bad, though. I wouldn’t even be paying attention to Ika Musume or MM if it weren’t for this place.

  • rincewind says:

Oh! I see a Kuroko in the preview!!
