Tales of Symphonia #07 — Electric Orbs and Tofu Dragons
October 3rd, 2010
I don’t think dragons work like that.
Impressions:
A step back from the previous one for sure. Last episode, they did a good job by fleshing out Regal and Presea’s backstory a bit more, but this time, UFOTable tried to get away with Sheena just making a lot of faces to show how traumatized she was and the music and direction wasn’t really there to support it, particularly with Volt making strange buzzing sounds in the background that made it sound like a toaster with bread jammed in it. The little epilogue for Corrine showing them running around, shopping, assassinating people together also felt out of place, and that’s how they chose to spend 2/3rds of the episode; angsty Sheena getting Volt. Don’t cry, sad ninja, you have large breasts.
After that, it was on to save Colette finally, but first they had to fight through the swarm of tofu dragons. How exactly did Lloyd cut a dragon in five bloodless pieces at once exactly? At least it was better action than watching everybody bounce off a big stationary electric sphere. They did skip the really annoying boss fight against the giant dragon. Those jerks. Things then ended with Yuan dropping the ‘bombshell’ that Lloyd is Kratos’ son. A shock to us all, I know. I’m not overly worried that they won’t have time to wrap things up in the next five episodes since, like all Tales games, the last third is mostly pointless dungeon crawling, but thirty minutes on Volt seems a bit much, especially since unlike Presea/Regal’s stuff, they really didn’t add anything to Sheena.
So, meh. UFOTable’s done better with this series, but at least they’ve just about exhausted all the side-characters except the half-elves elves. Yeah, totally not half-elves and can get hopefully get back to the core story now and for the final set of episodes after the end of the Tethe’alla chapter.
