Invasion! Squid Girl #03 — Fear the Banana
October 18th, 2010
How do you live next to the ocean and not know how to swim?
Impressions:
The less said about the first segment, the better. They wanted to scare Squidhead because she didn’t believe in ghosts, so they took her to a graveyard and got freaked out themselves. After becoming seperated, she used her squid power to glow and you can write the rest of the episode yourself. Part 2 was mostly about the food chain with a brief "teach Takeru how to swim" segment in the middle, which was a welcome respite from the single joke about imagining inflatables as death machines that dominated the other five minutes of the segment. The final part introduced Nagisa, a new worker at the bar who is terrified of Tentaclehead.
Despite the absolutely abysmal first segment, it did salvage things in the other two and actually got genuinely funny for at least the start of the third. While almost completely lacking any kind of personality, Nagisa is a good foil to Squid Face, and the blank grin while attempting to loom or brandishing tentacles menacingly really sells all those scenes. The middle part also had a few moments, but I enjoyed the little bit in the middle about teaching Takeru how to swim like a squid a lot more than the main gag of the episode where she was scared to death of anything that floated, including an inflatable banana.
