A Certain Magical Index II #04 — Night Of a Million Billion Nuns
October 29th, 2010
You know, it worked pretty well in Startropics too.
Impressions:
An okay episode, but for all its bluster, we really didn’t cover almost any ground, and while they’ve clearly learned some lessons about exposition, after the fourth or fifth time that a nun tried to sneak up on Saji as people were explaining various things, that shifted from just silly to eye-rollingly bad. Also, nuns make a very poor swarm. Well, the squadron with their eardrums stabbed out make a better swarm. They’re that proper mix of crazy instead of just cannon fodder with a girly voice. I like violence, but if you’re going to act like it’s serious, then you better prove that it is serious. An endless swarm of easily beatabe nuns weilding ridiculous weapons ranging from exploding torches to feather dusters does not qualify. That was really what drove this episode down, outside of the standard "Church bad! Killing bad! Boobs good." rambling. Seriously, Styl. Couldn’t you say "look at her cross" instead of "look at her chest?" when you decided to get all territorial and pedantic with which sect of the church Orsola is now a part of?
*ahem* Anyway, Touma ran in, grabbed Orsola, everybody else showed up, then he ran out. And that was it for him and the plot really. Styl, Saji, and Index beat up some generic nuns while talking about how they were doing it. Generic anythings are rarely a threat nor does smacking them around effortlessly carry any real weight. Half this episode could have been skipped without any real loss. At around the halfway mark, they’re surrounded by crazy nuns, and the episode ends on the cliffhanger that… they’re still surrounded by crazy nuns, albeit a few of them slightly crazier, but probably even less combat ready now that they have no inner ear. Maybe there’s a silver blessing though. Maybe that means that nobody will try to talk at them next week.
Preview:
Nuns are watching warmly.

I (don’t) like how Index can conveniently forget that (it is her own belief that) she can’t cast any spells.
(Of course we know that’s all bullshit – But this is something she supposedly doesn’t know)
