Sengoku Basara 2 #06 — The Deaths of Mooks
August 15th, 2010
Who are these people again?
Impressions:
Now this is a step in the right direction. Let’s start with the negative though. The biggest issue is that Motochika (and Oyamada) have had barely any screentime whatsoever. Outside of the OVA, this is the longest we’ve seen him. Don’t even get me started on Oyamada and suddenly being ganked by a bunch of grunts while Yukimura screams his name. Neither of their apparent deaths (like anybody believes that) are particularly relevant or dramatic. I also do take small issue with Hideyoshi destroying the ocean and raising entire mountains with his punches. It’s stretching the limits for even this overpowered world. All the flash and explosions are easy to take, but when his punches sometimes raise mountains and sometimes just cause light bruising, I’m getting conflicting messages. The animation after the bizarrely placed ED cut (seriously, it’s 18 minutes in and then the episode picks right up after it) was also a bit… well… full of stills. This show has seen better fights too, but at least this one stretched out for basically the entire second half of the episode.
Regardless, it’s great to see this show getting back to being more ridiculous, less whiny, and having more things go boom. Sure, the first 10 minutes was as mindnumbing as ever, but at least after that we have warlords actually warring instead of being stricken impotent by ennui. Those giant cannons just scream overcompensation too. Next week looks to be action packed too, and aside from Musashi popping up out of nowhere, looks to even involve mostly main characters. Hopefully this means that the show got all its melodrama out of its system finally.
Preview:
Shingen vs Masamune and Musashi shows up.
