Sengoku BASARA 2 #03 — Nerf Nodachi
July 25th, 2010
Damn, Keiji. Take better care of your equipment.
Impressions:
Well, this was different. Since it took a trip for the inane, even for this show, I’m going to call that a bad thing. The first half was the usual drivel. War is evil. No more killing. I like steak. They may or may not have actually said one of those. It’s not exactly a compelling message when four of your central protagonists fight each other for giggles while the fifth is trying to get into the sixth’s panties. The battle began with Kanetsugu appearing and then immediately blasting off again. I should have taken that as an ill omen of things to come. The fight between Toshiie and Keiji was pretty nice, although Toshiie’s skin either deflects blades or Keiji’s Nodachi is made of rubber. Then Toshiie hit Keiji and caused an explosion of cherry petals and flashback. That’s one great way to competely kill the drama of a fight scene. Nobody ever got pumped up over Nerf battles. I like the yelling and exploding. I don’t miss them not being able to hit each other if the alternative when they do succeed is "nothing happens."
Things unfortunately just got weirder from there. Masamune was standing in a field of dead soldiers… then he yells at them to wake up. If they had just left it there, it would have been nicely tragic for him, maybe even driven home that "war is bad, mmkay?" point that they spend so much time trying to pound into our heads. Instead, all of his solders get up like shambling zombies. I’m not sure what the message here is. Masamune’s soldiers are zombies? Or if you yell loud enough, you can revive the dead? BUT WAIT, there’s more. Yukimura also demonstrated his super-hearing, and somehow managed to hear Oichi crying from a castle on a mountain miles away. A mountain that looked like it was covered in forests, but was actually completely barren and had an evil castle on top. Apparently they forgot to plunder Nobunaga’s summer home.
Preview:
Crazy crazy Oichi.
