Ookami-san and Her Seven Companions #02 — The Boy Who Cried OP

July 7th, 2010

No! Bad JC Staff! Bad!

Impressions:

Sigh. This show’s certainly not making it easy. The first 15 minutes of it were bad. Under produced and almost nothing but a stream of talking heads from start to finish with the damn narration still interrupting damn near everything. Ryouko smiles as she befriends dogs… so the narrator interjects "RYOKO LIKES DOGS," followed by Ryoushi walking out and untying them… "THESE ARE RYOUSHI’S DOGS!"  Then Ryoko harumphs and blushes followed by the narrator pointing out that she’s being tsundere. Thanks. I almost couldn’t put the clues together. It’s like watching a show with a four year old. Maybe next time you should include blinking letters and a giant news ticker scrolling across the screen. Then, to make matters worse, they tried to sell some drama over who that mysterious stone thrower from the start of episode one could have been. It’s a bloody mystery.

Things improved immensely in the final quarter of the episode though. I really loved that they actually finally put the two divergent narrative streams to good use for once when Ryoko was trying to steel herself, and the action was enjoyable to watch although given the first half, it’s not hard to see where the budget came from. Of course, they had to ruin that entire scene by playing the OP as an insert song over it. Is this JC Staff’s new thing? Make sure that the OP gets played in at least every other episode in every show they make? I would have been happier without the montaging of the rest of the group too, particularly the characters just showing up to be silly in what was clearly meant to be Ryoushi’s moment of triumph. Let’s stick with the boxers and tasers, not with the brooms and wooden lollipops. The big stirring reveal that Ryoushi is some kind of slingshot god was… well… whatever. At least his testicles dropped, although I have no idea how we’re supposed to swallow that his weak little uppercut was more effective than a boxer’s electrified uppercut. If the entire episode had been like the last 5 minutes though, I wouldn’t have had anything to complain about.

Oh yeah, and the episode was kind of based on The Boy Who Cried Wolf in about the same way that Koihime Musou is based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Hmm.. I’m still not sure what to think about this show.

So… not at all and with lesbians?

  • MisaoFan says:

Aroduc, Okami is very compared to Taiga (Toradora!) and Ryoshi very compared to Araragi (Bakemonogatari).

  • Albedo says:

I see few similarities between ararararagi and this kid. style’s wrong, character traits are wrong, only thing he has going similar is the hair but even that is a stretch.

  • Anonymous says:

Anime fans are easily amused. As long as a character looks like another character from a popular show they automatically like the new show whether it deserves praise or not.

  • Jack Damn says:

Argh….don’t tell me that annoying narration is going to last the entire show!?!? FFFFFFFUUUUUUUU!! I was so hoping it was just a first episode gadget.

  • Anise Punter says:

Hey everyone, it turns out that Ookami is tough on the outside, but she can be set straight with a good dicking, or at least that’s what I gathered from her miniature inner-self counterpart.

Not sure what message JCStaff is sending to those impressionable Japanese girls out there.

  • Aex says:

For the love… cut the narrator’s lines by half and this show would be great!! Do they think everything really needs THAT much explanation?? Other then that, it was good that Ryoushi finally got his groove on and what not, and a peek at Ryouko’s ultimate nemesis.

  • sora says:

the narrator is a witch!!! burn her!!! >.<
Ryoushi gets the points of the day for growing some balls… and shoting them at gangsta thugs… extra cools for you Ryoushi….

    • Silver says:

I think he always had balls. He just have that phobia but that does not make him any less of a man. There are many others who don’t have any phobias but are just plain cowards.

  • MisaoFan says:

The DVD/BD version without the narrator will be releasing at end of September.

  • Anonymous says:

the narrator is killing the show.

this is almost enjoyable until you hear captain obvious enter.

    • Albedo says:

      That’s captain Kuroko remember.
As long as she doesn’t get the chance to say onee-sama this time around I might be able to handle it.

  • MisaoFan says:

You are forget to watch Shiki first episode only !!!

  • Silentbrick says:

Well, I can honestly say I’d rather get hit with an uppercut than getting smacked by a frigging steel ball fired from a sling shot. Those can and will kill you if they hit you in the head. The Roman army used to use slingers for a reason.

Still, I don’t know about this show, this entire season seems to be kind of devoid of anything really good to watch.

  • Solaris says:

Actually Koruko’s voice as the narrator is the only nice feature of this… thing.

    • Albedo says:

      Are you sarcastic or insane?

I just noticed that I seem to be saying this sort of thing a lot to you…
No offense intended but… seriously… who’s paying you to say this?

      • Solaris says:

If you are referring to Mitsudomoe post, well, i liked more Kodomo no Jikan indded, but not cause of the perv-jokes, so yeah, i was serious there. We could continue that discussion elsewere if you like it.

Here, i judjed the whole Ookamisan as crap, and i’m sure i pointed it out before.
Kuroko voice was nice as Kuroko indeed, but it’s out of char here. The narration isn’t good either. So it was irony.

I guess i’m quite the nobody here, so excuse me if i play out like this.
You can ask me politely about my opinion and i’ll be glad to answer you. So, please, refrain from addressing to me in such rude manner like you did before.

      • Albedo says:

I still can’t tell whether you’re being sarcastic or not…
you did read my whole post right? The “no offense” part was put there for a reason. You’re entitled to your opinion just as much as I am entitled to having an opinion of your opinion ^^

    • Jack Damn says:

I just got off the phone with the director and he said they originally wanted James Earl Jones as the narrator, but he wouldn’t do it. Something about being the wrong gender, etc.

  • ark noir says:

Best thing this season for me was reading some of these wry sarcastic comments in this peanut gallery. Genuinely laughed reading them! good work posters!

  • demonic apostle says:

KILL THE $#$#$%^% NARRATOR! Such a paiiin! And her voice is horrible too! By the way, the guy who hates men is going to announce that he’s gay in the final episode. I’m sure of it.

  • […] The second episode of Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakamatachi continues the exposition: 1) the main characters are deepened, 2) more characters are introduced, and 3) a larger plot development is hinted at. This review focuses on these three elements. For a more comprehensive episode summary take a look at Hanners’ Anime ‘Blog, and for more extensive screenshots Aroduc has got you covered. […]

  • The Phantom says:

I cant stand the narrator she is so fucking annoying, if she could just STFU for some minutes this show would be more enjoyable.

  • wong lewat says:

i see, everyone (except one) here hates the narrator
get real man, she got payed to narrate like that, hate the director….
and i don’t like this “Anyone who disagree is a troll” thing, it’s annoying
well, this is just an opinion of opinion about someone else’s opinion….. no offense :p

    • Aex says:

It’s not so much hate for me, as it is unnecessary. She’s a decent character, but she talks way too much, and when she’s talking OVER the main cast half the time, it starts to get annoying.

      • Solaris says:

The narrator voice is ok and rather good too. I hope i’m not too biased by how much i liked Kuroko’s char back there. Kuroko was a mishievous and quite annoying char whose role was to bother Mikoto for comedy. You alresdy noticed how much the narrator is annoying in this anime and bothering the chars in their own narration. I think her lines were studied indeed to be like that, as this is the parody of a fairy tales’ narrator. Pity i don’t really like it, cause it’s way too much annoying. I must admit that parody is well done though.
