Working!! #05 — Wrath of the Poplar

May 2nd, 2010

If they just had an episode of her stomping a city flat, I wouldn’t mind.

Impressions:

I started watching this episode fully intending to bail on the series if I wasn’t amused within the first few minutes, but surprisingly enough, the first half was actually pretty entertaining for once. That’s more of a pity than you might think because the second half was atrocious. Takanishi called in to take the day off to take care of his sick sister, so the focus was all on everybody else working around Inami’s issues and then treating the fact that the cooks had to work slightly harder than normal on about the same level as if they all contracted leprosy when Takanashi showed up to apologize. I have absolutely no bloody clue what that was even about. "I had to serve a few tables, BUT I CAN NEVER ADMIT THAT TO HIM!" I know that I’ve also remarked about the joke recycling before, but this episode had one literal copy and paste between the first and second halves, they just redrew a couple business men and changed it to a soccer team instead of a baseball team, but was otherwise literally the exact same joke and exact same reaction animation for Inami. A-1 is getting really lazy.

Like I said though, at least the first half was fun. The more screentime for Satou picking on Poplar, the better. Especially Gozillapoplar. Takanashi’s DEFCON ratings for the girls was also decent enough (despite the 30 seconds of flashback jammed in there), as was Souma’s roundabout way of trying to clue Yachiyo in about Satou although that did end far more abruptly and cliche than I liked. At least he got another dig in at Poplar on his way out. I have noticed that plot contrivance has been very careful to keep Inami far away from Satou thus far. It’d be such a shame for him to have to beat her with a stick for trying to go after him. Such a shame.

A week without Inami? Bliss.

lol Godzillapoplar! Maybe I should start catching up.

Personally, I bailed on this series.

I like some of the characters (“like” is a strong word), but I find the overall story rather boring. This series is character driven and I can’t stop hoping all the characters are killed by Mega Piranha.

    I hit the wall.

    No Inami-chan next week!?

I think an episode devoted to the Takanashi sisters will be a nice change in pace for this show.

Good thing this is such a touchy-feely restaurant staff; we’re working on three weeks I think since the point at which I would have fired Inami. It boggles the mind that she’s just allowed to continue working despite being incapable of serving half the customers, and not in a “ha, funny!” way. We get it, the joke was old by episode 2.

Sadly, the show is better with increasing amounts of Poplar, and I’ve never been a big fan of characters like Poplar.
