Tales of Symphonia #06 — Punishment

Awwww… Alicia…

Impressions:

This was much much better than the last one, but I’m not sure how happy adaptation purists are going to be. Still, it’s nice to see that if they were going to devote 30 more minutes to Alicia here that they did a very good job of it and didn’t hammer us over the head too hard with the characters shouting about how they’re feeling. Bravo, UFOTable. It almost makes me forget the 40 minutes of exposition you spewed out for the previous episode. I digress though. I really did enjoy this episode, even if it was quite the tear jerker. UFOTable did a great job with the music and the direction, particularly in the scene where Presea lost it at Regal and Alicia’s whole mutation bit.

As I said though, it’s a pretty big departure from the game. Mithos uses The World and takes Colette off with him and then the rest of the time is spent on flashbacks. I’m okay with this change though. Colette didn’t really contribute much once the game reached Teth’e’alla anyway. Letting her be the damsel superweapon in distress gives a little more oomph to Lloyd’s irrational hatred of Crucis above and beyond his mother issues. They did start to overtly hint towards Refill Raine and Genis’ backstory this episode too, but I’d be shocked if the next episode wasn’t all about Sheena. They’ve got a lot of ground to cover in just two more episodes, unless they’re going to have a Crucis extension as well.

In any case, while this episode was a little lighter on the action than most of the episodes in Sylvarant, and we could have all done without seeing roided up Regal in a speedo, but otherwise, it’s great to see UFOTable doing a fantastic job with this once again. A shame the next episode’s not due out until the end of September.

6 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Chen says:

It’s almost been 7 years… 7 years. It’s almost reached Hellsing Ultimate levels, except it doesn’t have vampires to appease the Twilight crowd.

Rather commendable, considering it all started on the GameCube, which as we all know was for the kiddiez!!11one

    • Aroduc says:

It’s only been three years for the OVA, you drunkard. If you’re going by that scale, it’s been 13 years for Hellsing. Plus, I’m okay with a two year break to spit out the 7 Rakkyo movies.

    • Nellie says:

What does Twilight have to do with Hellsing OVA? Hellsing has vampires and Twilight has sparkly fairies.

  • Gin says:

HAHAHAHA!!! Adaption purists; happy? Oh, how you make me laugh, Aroduc.

Still, this was a very good episode. It really improves Regal’s character (which was somewhat lacking in the game) and any expansion to a character is a plus.

  • Anise Punter says:

Regal was looking awfully dandy there.

  • Sterling01 says:

I wonder if there’s going to a Ratatosk ova
