Overrun by Stray Cats! #05 — Cake Is War

May 4th, 2010

They should have gone to Big Sight.

Impressions:

A pretty decent episode, although far more cliche than I would have liked. The weird slapstick from last week was gone in favor of a return to what sort of passes for development with this show. However, the "rich girl is lonely and socially awkward" story has been done a thousand times before and AIC did absolutely nothing new or interesting with it here. They did it competently, mind you, but that’s a far cry from praise. Plus, there was no ninja Horie Yui popping up to grope anybody. They did, however, skip the ED to give us an extra minute and a half of show, which I always appreciate. Sure, it was mostly just pinup shots of the girls in swimsuits, but it’s an effort.

I do think that they’re really shooting themselves in the foot with how much they’re overplaying the drama once again. Particularly from the audience’s viewpoint, all these events happened over the last 15 minutes, but here’s Takumi, crying and punching his ground just because he didn’t realize that Chise wanted to hang out with the rest of them. Dial it back at least 8 notches there, AIC. Even Takumi couldn’t remember anything past what was introduced this episode. It really makes me wonder/fear what they’re going to do for the obligatory overly dramatic season ending bit. A triple suicide while quoting Proust?

12 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Nanaya says:

It’s not a romantic comedy unless there’s shoehorned-in, angsty overacted drama!

And what does this series have to do with cats (aside from the innuendo)? Or am I missing something obvious?

    • Aroduc says:

The shop is named Stray Cats and they’ve said a few times that Takumi, Fumino, and Nozomi are all just ‘stray cats’ that Otome adopted.

    • Anonymous says:

did you happen to overlook the gray haired, cat eared (kinda), nyaa-machine known as Nozomi?

      • Anise Punter says:

I motion that we henceforth only refer to Nozomi as “the cat-eared nyaa machine, Nozomi”

      • Albedo says:

The cat-eared nyaa machine is possibly the best character if only because she doesn’t say nearly as much stereotypical crap as the rest the cast.

      • marvelous stan says:

The cat-eared nyaa-machine benefits on that count from just plain old talking less than the rest of the cast, though.

  • Silver says:

Yes, this episode sounds really interesting to me. As long as they don’t do what they did last week again. Well, last week episode WAS entertaining but at the same time, man do I hate it. It almost as if the director took everything and threw it out the window and only sprinkled a bit of drama here and there.

    • Yue says:

That’s crazy enough to work and stir up some gut reactions. ^_~

I have one question though, why do “intermission stills” between commercials used more attractive pictures of men? Guys can also become attractive given some focus and dynamic concepts (not referring to Hideyoshi and Bishies).

  • Man0warr says:

You realize each episode is being directed by a different person right?

  • rufe says:

    Yea…melodrama.

The rich girl’s being a baby, there’s no need to freak out because you couldn’t read her mind -__-

  • Dual says:

Not enough Kaho in this episode.
